Boston Shootout

Had the pleasure of having ClydePolk visit the Woodshed yesterday, he had brought along some of his recordings to compare on the Shed rack to his own. One of the discs he brought was Boston I guess its title is just Boston, the one with the spaceship. Not necessarily my favorite band but certainly they have sold alot of records. Anyway, you go with what you got.
The copy Clyde brought was the Sony Super Bit Map, a technology Sony introduced many years ago as an improvement to Redbook. 20 bit recording.
I happened to have both the vinyl and the SACD of this album so we conducted an unscientific shootout of the three.
I loaded all three albums into the rack using the MF kw, the Denon 2900 with MF tube buffer, and the Rega TT, each source was fed into the BAT VK31 SE.
Now Clyde could not tell which one I would switch to, but he easily identified each source through the Carver Amazing Speakers. I would click around in random order and we had the album sinced well enough so he had no way of knowing which source I had switched to except his ears, of course since the sources were different that adds to the mix as well.
We each agreed the vinyl came out on top, it was simply more involving, more holigraphic, the pace quickened and the heart just pounded more. The guitar riffs just cut through the band and the listener a bit more. The vinyl I have is clean and sans nicks and pops.
Next came the SACD, a close second, nice extended highs on the guitar solo of More than a Feeling, bass line was solid and deep with the vocals centered just where the need to be.
The Super Bit Map version although not bad did exhibit the digital glare on the highs and just seemed a bit lifeless, leaving the tap out of your toe so to speak.
I was a bit suprised to have the vinyl top the SACD but there it is and why I believe you need to have a TT in your rack, the sound quality can reach out and grab you.
