My friend is an idiot and...
he wants me to buy his Sunfire True MkIV. Is this tiny guy worth anything to anyone? Any experience with this sub? I know it is small (11" cubed) and my friend is lame so I would be able to practically steal it from him, but I do not want a sub that I would have to replace when the bass hits and I start to groan. I am searching for a sub that goes low and sounds great while listening to mostly music and some HT. I have heard good things about SVS and Velodyne (hype?), so there it is.
Any inputs?

I used to own the MKIV. It's one amazingly powerful sub, like Lasareath already said. It goes very low, but when I had a choice on which sub to keep, I kept NHT SubTwo and sold that one...Panasonic PT-AE4000U projector for movies

save up for SVS
SVS do look great, but which one (and is the hype hysterical?)...
NHT looks great too...
I am in MN, the Saint Cloud area to be precise, and would travel to the Twin Cities to audition some subs in action. Anyone out there from this area, willing to let a stranger into your home to feel the pounding of an SVS or NHT or Sunfire?
Also, should I pay much attention to the frequency responce statistics or is in room response significantly different than stated? Many SVS subs state they go super deep, and others, like the NHT mentioned previously, say to 21hz. +/-3db.

SVS are amazing. My sub (not an SVS) cost $2K and a friend got an SVS I think that was around $ 1500 and it completely destroy's my sub. Very impressed with SVS.
P.S. You friend is likley not an idiot. He is likely trying to talk you into buying the Sunfire so he can buy an SVS ! -
I havent heard the sunfire, but I would guess that it is a very capable sub for someone who doesn't want a sub the size of a sub-compact car in their living room.
I own Velodyne; its easily comparable to any sub in its price range.
SVS gives you more bang for the buck, but early models were, well, the size of an SUV. Got the room for one? Cant go wrong with it. But its definately not for everyone.
Also consider HSU.Do you hear that buzzing noise? -
Best sub I ever heard was the VMPS Larger...
Once I hooked up my system with an optical cable -- it dug far beyond 20hz and rattled EVERYTHING and ANYTHING. An amazing beast for music as well....
Lightman can attest to the destructive ability and tone of that subwoofer - hands down.
As for SVS, they are great for HT and ok for music... you can find alot more sub for similar money - but maybe not as cute- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
I have the VMPS Larger and it is the best sub I have ever heard. It is very quick and responsive with music. It is very big, but that is a cool thing to me. When you take off the grill and see a 12" woofer and a 15" woofer looking at you it is quite intimidating. Also, I now have come to realize that passive subs are the way to go. I have never heard a SVS, but they are well respected. Get a VMPS if you can find one cheap. You will be amazed.
