So - I went to the doctor's office and they were booked for the rest of the week.

But I did get to see a nurse, and apparently I have some kind of an infection. Don't know what it is yet, but I was given some Tylenol, Sudafed, and cough medication.

Fever is really hot here, but apparently if it doesn't increase I should be fine.

    Another terrible night with fever.

There's got to be something that I'm missing, I'm eating plenty of fruits (Vitamin C), taking cold showers, cough medicine and Tylenol. I just wish there was a way of getting through this faster.

I feel for ya bro. My youngest daughter just started school, and brought home a bug. I was just up with her for a while. Fever, lots of coughing. I don't feel so great myself.
    Take care Bro.

Same here - nonstop coughing, headache, fever. Plus my sinuses are clogged.

Must be all those germs at school.

On the topic of discussing germs, I've heard differing opinions on how to prevent germs from entering your body. I have a friend who, ever since he was a kid, would touch everything and eat without washing his hands. On the other hand I make sure to keep myself clean and wash my hands before eating.

Now could it be that you need some germs to build up passive immunity? For example, my doctor never gets sick and maybe it's because everyone is always coughing over him...

FYI, for anything sinus related I have always taken a hot shower. It helps to open things up and get them out of your body. I have yet to feel worse taking a hot shower even when I have a fever. And while this may sound gross, it works. Blow your nose and try to cough up as much as you can while you are in the shower. They also make these Alka Seltzer type fizz things that you can put on the floor of the shower so that you can get some relief while just standing there. I have dealt with sinus issues my whole life and this is what I have found that works when they flair up. Oh yeah, and gargle warm salt water. If you are having drainage at all then your sinuses and the back of your throat will get inflamed and make you feel even worse. Gargling with salt water will either prevent what will more than likely happen or at least soothe the pain you might already be feeling. Do that a couple of times a day until you are better just to make sure.

    Hope you feel better man.

Oh, it'll burn. Have you ever been in the ocean with fresh cut? Same thing. The back of your throat gets inflamed from you sniffing, snorting, blowing your nose, drainage, etc. It will burn (I assume that is what you mean by hurts) but in the end it will make it feel better, at least it does for me. My dad can't stand salt water so he uses the original Listerine. The kind that looks like someone peed in a bottle. That apparently works for him.

Well Listerine will disinfect like the salt water and the alcohol will numb the pain of the sore throat, like the salt water will do too. Only problem is that Listerine probably stings 5 times worse than salt water alone.

Yeah, but I never get sick on trips. It's always when I first move into the dorms in September.

So - I've been sick again and was wondering what can be done to reduce your susceptibility to colds.

I know about the eat yogurt, take Vitamin C, and drink plenty of fluids, but that's about it.

you might need daily vitamin supplementation if you got sick this fast bud. I am prone to these kinds of sinus infections (bacteriological, as I suspect yours are as well)

I take vemma daily, and instead of geting them 4 times a year, I only got it twice, (January, and just last week)

I usually take Tylenol Sinus Severe when I start feeling throat or sinus irritation. has nipped it in the bud a few times.

your sinuses, or your tonsils could be the culprit to you being succeptible. might want to see and ENT guy (Ears, Nose Throat). My wife is breaking my balls to see one and she has a point.

check long shots too, like does diabetes run in your family? either way if you eat sugar like a lunatic....it can lower your defences.

I drink hot sauce like I drink water. I didn't get sick once last year and I haven't been sick so far this year. I'm not sure if that's the reason but I suspect that has something to do with it.

    Hot sauce is delicious!

(Washing your hands a lot, carrying anti-bacterial gel and avoiding germy people help alot too)

Thought I would add a few things I have found that help.

-A netie pot is good for sinuses, a little weird to use for the first couple of times but alot of people swear by them.

-Sometimes what people think is dust on the walls or ceiling is actually mold. Use a combo of water and bleach to kill it and to prevent further spreading.

-If you have an older pillow throw it out and get a new one.

-Use allergern covers on your pillow and mattress.

-A well rounded diet always helps.....stay away from anything that has high fructose corn syrup in it (no soda pop or energy drinks with sugar). There are a gazillion reasons why....just trust me on this one.

-Get an air purifier for your room

-drink 10 8oz. glasses of water daily

-Now this is not that easy BUT it can have a dramatic effect on your overall health plus it will boost your immune system alot. Start eating only fresh foods. I know you are in school and limited on money probably so budget out a weekly meal plan and stick to it. Stay away from anything artificial, processed,or boxed for the most part. No frozen microwave dinners unless they are organically certified and no fast food what-so-ever. A good rule of thumb is.....the more colorful the foods on your plate the healthier they are for you. Did you know that a red pepper has more vitamin C than an orange? Did you know that of all fruits that blueberries have the highest antioxidant levels? Simply put, this is a form of detox for your body to rid itself of all the manmade chemicals we put into our food to make it more cost effective for the manufacturers.

-If you have colored junk coming up when you are coughing you need some antibiotics to clear it up possibly (I am not a doctor or nurse so please check with your local health care provider before taking any kind of medicine). A friend of mine went through the same thing and did nothing about it thinking it would clear up on its own and he got bronchitis which led to walking pneumonia which led to pneumonia. Needless to say he learned his lesson from this experience.

-Last thing and I know you will be like, "WTF!!" but once again trust me on this one. I am in the business of helping others become more healthy through nutrition and exercise and I SWEAR by this and so does anyone who has actually tried it, Chia Seeds. Yes, like the ones in the Chia Pet commercials....those seeds though are not for human consumption, just for those little clay animals. There also is a variation of these seeds caled "Salba" which is nothing more than marketing hype. I get the powder form usually (also comes in the seed form) and put a scoop into my oatmeal every morning. You have to add 2x as much water but that is a good thing. There is NO weird taste associated with these at all; they take on the taste of whatever you put them in. Only thing it really changes if you use the seed form is it changes the way that food you put them in looks like (cause it has little black seeds in it). If you use the powder though it is alot less noticable.

    What are Chia Seeds?
Chia Seeds are a powerhouse nutritional food with benefits superior to flax seeds. Chia has a very mild flavor (and no "fishy" taste like other foods high in Omega-3 acids). They are extremely rich in Omega-3 acids and are a very good source of fiber and manganese. Chia seeds are raw, low in sodium and cholesterol-free. You can understand why many consider Chia Seeds as nature's perfect food.

Chia Seeds have the highest known whole-food source of Omega-3 acids. These acids promote cardiovascular and mental health and benefit many body functions.

    Where are Chia Seeds grown?
Chia originated in Mexico and now grow in Mexico and in Central and South Americas.

    What's in Chia Seeds?
Chia seeds typically contain about 20 percent protein, 30 percent fat and 40 percent carbohydrates. The fat contains a very high concentration of Omega-3 fatty acids.

    How are Chia Seeds used?
Chia Seeds are mild tasting and easily digestible. The shells are easily broken and can even be swallowed whole.

Chia won't alter the taste of foods when it's used as an ingredient. It can be sprinkled on cereal or eaten as a snack. Grinding Chia produces a meal called pinole, which can be mixed with flour into baked goods like biscuits, cakes and breads.

Soaked seeds are gelatinous and used in porridges and puddings. The seeds can be soaked in water or fruit juice creating a drink known in Mexico as chia fresca.

What are the benefits of Chia Seeds?

    High In Omega-3 Acids.
Chia seed has higher levels of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) than flax seed. ALA is an essential acid because it is not produced by the body. In fact, chia seeds have the highest known whole-food source levels of Omega-3 acids, as measured by percent of weight.
    Rich In Antioxidants.
Chia is a great natural source of antioxidants, including chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, myricetin, quercetin and flavonols.

    Full of Important Nutrients.
Chia is an excellent source of calcium, phosphorus, manganese, potassium, iron, zinc and copper. Chia contains six times more iron than spinach.

    Low In Sodium and Cholesterol-Free.
Chia contains less than half the sodium of flax seed, per serving. This is important to those with high blood pressure and concerned about sodium intake. As a plant-based source of Omega-3, Chia is cholesterol-free.

    Promotes Hydration.
Chia soaks up water and this promotes hydration and electrolytes retention.

    Helps in Weight Loss.
Chia is very filling. As more Chia is eaten, there's less room for fattening foods.

    Builds Endurance.
The Mayan word for Chia is "strength." Chia builds stamina and endurance because it steadily releases slow-burning glucose into the bloodstream

    Gluten-Free.
The protein in chia seed is gluten free.

    Stays Fresh.
Unlike flax seed, chia seed stays fresh for extended periods of time.

I'm a vegetarian and I eat fresh foods a lot. Maybe that's another reason I'm not getting sick? I never thought of that before but sounds like good advice.
