Need help with digital camera.Batteries and charger

Hi all.Im posting here because I know a lot of you use digital cameras to post pics.Well Id like to do the same but the Sony DSC-P51 I got on ebay didnt come with the original batteries and the charger unit.I called sony and the batteries are reasonable at 8.99 but the charger unit is 69.95.I paid 10.50 for the camera.The manual I downloaded said alkaline batteries arent siutable.Is this True???
