"New Speaker Smell"

I'm sure most of you have noticed the new speaker smell when you take your speakers out of the box for the first time. It smells like fresh plastic or something, similar to the new car smell.

Well, I had a spare Monitor 30 laying around (i acquired a damanged one on ebay for $0.99 to use for spare parts) and no longer have a use for it so i decided to take it apart for the fun of it. First of all i was surprised by the huge magnet on the back of the 5.25" woofer. That thing seems to make up the majority of the mass of the speaker.

Anyway, the second thing i noticed was the STRONG smell that came out of the cabinet. It was so potent that i had a headache for about 3 hours after that. It was the new speaker smell but much stronger.

What causes this smell? I'm sure it can't be good for you (hence the headache!) Is it the chemicals used to construct them?

I don't know what causes it but I know exactly what your talking about. My whole room smells like it. I notice it as soon as I'm walking down my stairs into my theater room. I would love to get rid of it:confused: Suggestions anyone???

There's a lot of glue in there.

Myself, I let my speaker boxes cure(glue, caulk, and paint) for as many days as possible before installing the drivers. Over a week is ideal.

Do you think they'll leave an empty box sitting aside for a week at a factory simply because of the smell? Ha.

so if you had to get rid of it, what would you do?

Perhaps remove a couple of drivers so the cabinet is open to the air, and leave them in the garage for a few days?

That should do it, and might work even without removing the drivers.

Yup. Glues/adhesives from the cabinet, drivers and crossover components etc still curing. In some cases even lacquer or paint. Sorta like new car smell. It'll go away eventually.
