My grandfather used to tell me about the Willie and Joe comics Mauldin wrote for The Stars and Stripes and he used to clip them and send them back to my grandmother while he was stationed on an airbase in the Phillippines.

My grand-father-in-law had a whole scrap book that he and his brother kept from the various Mauldin comics they clipped while stationed in Europe. My grand-father-in-law went to Europe via Normandy and his brother went to Europe via Italy and both wound up at the Battle of The Buldge and on to Berlin.

Every person I know that was in WWII or the Korean War, including my two great uncles said that Mauldin's work was one thing they all looked forward to.

I know there are online postings of Mauldin's work every where. Look it up and read it. The dude should have had many, many more accolades and awards than he got.

It's funny, even though he passed away over 10 years ago now, I can still remember sitting on the couch with my grandfather going through his clippings and having him explain why each one had humor, satire and truth in it. I'll have to find out if my grandmother has that book stashed somewhere.

My dad was a WWII vet. When I was a kid he had a collection of Bill Mauldin cartoons (featuring dogface infantrymen Willie and Joe) in the form of a paperback book entitled "Up Front". I think they had all been published in "Stars and Stripes" Mauldin was great!
