Cell phone help

Just moved into my dorm and realized that I forgot to bring my cell phone charger :(

Is there any way that I can charge my phone without the charger? The phone is a Motorola RAZR V3, which has a USB port. However, when I plug it into my PC the phone wakes up for 1 second, then turns back off.

The instruction manual states that you can charge with a PC by plugging it into a USB port and turning the phone and PC on. However, nothing happens after the 1 second and the phone does not charge.

What do I need to do to get this phone to charge from my PC?

Find a Radio Shack or Best buy and buy a new charger? :)

The manual clearly states that this is possible. However, after downloading/installing drivers, trying a different USB cable, and turning on/off the phone, it still doesn't charge!

What is the PC that you're charging it from? Are you going through a hub? Not all USB ports are the same, some are lower power (especially if you're going through a non-powered USB hub) and may not have enough juice to actually charge your phone.

Shouldn't need any "drivers" - the PC doesn't need to be aware of how the phone works to power it.

The PC is my Pentium II 350. Yes I am going through a hub, since there are only two USB ports on this PC and I'm using four (keyboard, mouse, phone, etc.)

    I don't have a powered hub though...

That's your problem. Find a PC with an open USB port, or unplug one of your hubs while you charge your phone and then just plug it back in so you can use your computer again.

Also, get a freaking new computer, will you? ;)

You mean buy a new computer. I don't want to do that. I'm on a budget man!

Okay. So I unplugged the hub and plugged the phone directly into the computer. No difference.

Could it be due to the fact that this PC is USB1? Or does it not matter?

Not sure, do you have any friends with newer PCs that you could try it out on?

Plus, you have one of the most common phones in the world, you can't find anyone in the dorm to lend you a charger? Good way to make new friends :)

Yeah, I was going to use a friend's PC to try it out on but I want it to work on mine too!

Plus I don't like borrowing stuff from people, just saying... When I lent my camcorder to a friend and it came back broken, I was pissed. So I try not to borrow or lend stuff unless absolutely necessary.

although that phone has (sort of) USB plug to it, it wasn't meant to be used as an interface to your PC USB port (for charging purpose.) Good news is any AC adapters with that USB plug (Motorola, HTC. BlackBerry, etc.) will work on that phone.

A trip to Target, BB, CC, Radio Shack, etc. will sure land you to an AC adapter with USB plug.
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

polkatese, where do you get that info? When I had one, I used my laptop to charge it. Thank god I don't have it anymore, what a POS, never again will I get a Motorola.

You're in college, just find some hot chick in your dorm and ask to borrow her charger. :D Maybe you can even borrow it for the night...

You're right! Neither of my friends' PC's would charge the cell phone. I tried 3 different PC's and none of them worked.

Do you have the right driver? I don't remember if mine required the driver to be present or not.

I don't know, Windows identified it as a "Motorola RAZR V3" and automatically installed the driver.

Did you use the one that came on the CD?

I suspect your PC is the issue, I believe you need usb 2.0 that carries the needed power. I've got a Motorola L6 SLVR and it can charge off my SMacintosh, once the appropriate drivers were installed.

Got a roommate with a more modern computer?

No, it does not work on my roommate's computer.

Thanks, my friend just came over and he has a spare charger so I'm using it right now.

Also, I can't run my Electrical Engineering CAD software on this PC (Electronics Workbench). So I guess it's time to upgrade my PC?

I think you need to check the hardware requirements for running that particular software. You may need some serious horsepower to run CAD - and that fleabay computer looks like a POS. ;)

That computer is crap, i throw those in the trash at work all the time. If you wanna be a CAD user you're gonna need a good workstation. Dual core, 2.4ghz or higher, 3-4 gigs of memory, big HD for the software, and a nice video card. Half assing things when it comes to computer specs isn't the right choice.

Look you have to get the motorola v3 software/drivers in order to charge off the computer. I had the same issues and that is the only way to get a v3 to charge from a cpu.

If you do torrents, then look for the motorola phone tools software in all of your usual torrent sites.

I just can't justify spending $1000+ on a PC to find out that it's worth nothing a few years later. My roommate used to have a top of the line gaming PC and his $500 graphics card was worth like 1/2 that a year or so later.

FYI, you do need the Motorola driver installed on your computer in order to charge your phone. I have a KRZR and that is what I had to do. And it doesn't matter how new or old your computer is because we literally just got new boxes here at work last Friday and I had to re-install the driver on the computer so I could charge my phone. Now you may still need USB 2.0 in order to properly charge it, but at least you are headed in the right direction.

Sorry, things cost money. You don't have to buy the newest high-end PC, but you gotta spend.... 500 bucks. It's a cost of your education. It's ridiculous that you think you can get through your major with a PC that is over 10 years old.

For education-level CAD work you don't need 3-4 gigs of RAM and a quad-core top-of-the line PC, but you need something newish. Sell some audio equipment :)

I believe for this phone to charge in a PC USB port (I had one) you need to have the Razr driver installed on the OS
