Nissan Maxima problems...

This is getting worse...
Just discovered another problem that is not related to the overheating issue - that there is a whining sound from the engine and it doesn't sound too good. A mechanic diagnosed it as a belt/pulley problem, but is not 100% sure.
P.S. Now that I think of it, we've never replaced the belts before, so it's probably time.polkaudio RT35 Bookshelves

On another note, most likely our next car will be a Jeep due to their reliability.
HA! HA! HA! I have a friend whose Jeep Wagoneer kept on breaking down on the freeway... it was so bad, I had to follow her home when we both worked at nights... one day she showed up real late... the Jeep's engine burst into flames on the freeway.

Are you saying Jeeps are not as reliable as the Nissan? Then why is it that Consumer Reports rated two Nissan SUV's as "below average" in reliability, but yet the Jeep Patriot gets an "above average"?polkaudio RT35 Bookshelves

I'm trying to figure this out -
If I understand correctly, a whining sound when moving but not when stopped would lead to a part that is rotating. So I think it's a belt.
Pardon my ignorance, but what kind of noise would a failing (or almost failing) belt make?polkaudio RT35 Bookshelves

What Consumer Reports says about a vehicle's reliability has little to do with how reliable it actually is or how great your experience with it will be. A story of one woman and her experiences with a Wagoneer that is now at least 17 years old also has nothing to do with how reliable Jeep products are now, and actually very little if anything to do with how reliable they were then.
As someone already said, your belts are spinning anytime the engine is on. It still could be a pulley of some sort, though. A pulley could be worn with bad bearings that squeal when they're spinning faster, but then don't make any noise when they're spinning slower when the engine's at idle.
When the engine is on, pop the hood and take a listen and see if you can hear anything squealing. If not, then have someone give it some gas to raise the RPM's and listen, or just grab the linkage under the hood yourself and rev the engine some and see if you can hear any squealing. If so, keep doing that and see if you can pinpoint it somewhere. It'd be great if you could narrow it down to a certain pulley so you know what it is needs replacing.
The tensioner pulley on my friend's 1997 BMW 318i went bad and was squealing, so last time I was visiting him he let me lend him a hand with replacing it.George Grand wrote: »

a loud squeal means you have a belt slipping which causes one or more of the pulleys to stop turning. This can cause your car to overheat if it's the water pump pulley that's not turning, or the air conditioner to stop blowing cold air if the a/c pulley is not turning, ps and alternater can be affected the same way causing your battery to not recharge or your ps to stop working.
The most dangerous is if the water pump pulley stops being rotated due to a belt slipping because the engine will quickly overheat and the engine will eventually lock up due to excessive heat on the pistons. Before it locks up you may blow a radiator hose due to excessive heat and pressure in the cooling system or your heads will warp and prevent your head gasket from keeping the coolant separated from the engine oil and the exhaust gases from mixing in with both the coolant and the engine oil.
A less loud whining noise can be a pulley beginning to fail due to age because their internal bearings don't last forever. I would assume if the pulley wasn't repaired, it would eventually lock up due to excessive heat and that could lock the belt up (loud squealing noise) and cause the other pulleys to stop being turned as discussed above.
If belts are fairly new then they can often just be tightened up but if they've never been replaced, you will want to replace them all.
Some cars have a manual belt adjustment pulley (bolt adjustment) and others have a spring loaded tensioner that automatically keeps the belt tension adjusted. The spring loaded tensioner can fail over time and need to be replaced. If it fails while your driving and it affects the water pump belt, your temperature gauge will quickly go to red/hot and you need to pull over immediately and shut the engine off and call aaa -
Turns out it was one of the drive belts failing. Will be fixed in an hour or so - will find out when we get it back from the mechanic.polkaudio RT35 Bookshelves

Fixed!
CL35m was right because one of the belts were slipping that had to do with the COOLING system. That's why the car was running so friggin' hot!!polkaudio RT35 Bookshelves
