This amp really bring this much? I searched and the retail was around 600 or so. Must be a sweet rig. Researching vintage amps and speakers kept me up until 1 last night... do I have a problem?

Marantz Power Amps are very much collected by the vintage Hi Fi group.

I dont know where you got your info but the Marantz dealer list shows it as 899 in 1975. I believe that was the MSRP on it.

It is a fine amplifier at 256w/ch for 2ch at 8 ohm 350 at 4 ohm. Specs show THD at .05 at 256 watts and .1 at 350.

    Now what is that worth?

I bet it goes for about 7 bills.

Are they highly collected because of rarity or clean sound or because they look beefy?

Im not sure on rarity. They do come up on Ebay now and again. Alot of the lower wattage ones show up alot. Havnt seen many on Craigs List. Marantz is a well built amplifier as well as most of there equipment.

I had a reciever from them back in 1974 and it was a nice amp.

This one happens to be just down the freeway from me. Hmmmmmm im looking for some beef for my system hmmmmmmm I could save 50 bucks by picking it up.

Should I wait for a Pioneer Spec 4 or Spec 2 ooooorrrrrr pick up the Marantz?

    Ohhh the horror the horror:o

If I go and get the Marantz that pumps 250 watts then I have to upgrade my speakers. The Infinity Qe's are rated at 100 watts. Hmmmmm

Do I see a set of Polks in my future or maybe some Klipsch RB-81's

The Pol LS19's are rated to 200 watts but there also rated at 4 ohms. This pushes the Marantz to 350 watts. Now the efficiency is 88db but with 350 watts we dont need to worry about that.

Now the Klipsch RB-81 is rated to 150 watts and at 8 ohms. Lower price tag and the efficiency is 97db.

Your amp and speakers don't have to have the same rating.
Your amp needs the extra wattage to handle the transients
without clipping, which is what causes most speaker damage.
As long as you don't try to push the speaker's to their rated
capacity, you'll be fine. I would hope you couldn't listen at
    a 100 wpc RMS!
