Hello

I was wondering if some one could tell me what are the advantages and disadvantages of using one amp with multiply channels or seperate amps for each channel.

thank you for your help

A multi-channel can save you space since all channels are in one chassis, but it is also very heavy. Moving 5-7 channel amps is not a fun task. You also have to deal with 5-7 power plugs instead of one, which takes up a lot of outlet space. Plus, if you use aftermarket power cables, 5-7 channels is a fair amount of money on those. However, if something happens or goes wrong with a monoblock, it's easier to fix/have fixed than a large multichannel amp.

You also need to look at your budget and if monos fit into it since they can be pricey depending on what brands/models you're looking at. For example, a 7 channel, 200wpc Outlaw amp is $2149, where as the same specs for 7 monoblocks would run you $2450.

I would go with separates whenever possible. But, you can choose however extreme you want to go. Most people are limited by funds and space.

Personally, I have four monoblocks for my two channel setup alone. That was an improvement from two stereo amps for each speaker.

I went to mono route the first time. If I had to do it all over, I'd still go mono but do to space, I think next purchase will be a multi-ch amp.

I run a multi-channel for my surrounds and have just purchased a quality 2 channel for the mains. That way the setup can (hopefully) double as a decent 2 channel rig too.
