You'll get mixed responses (both pretty similar in power, etc....). I would shy away from Onkyo (little bias too) because of the firmware update and people having problems with blowing speakers - I thought it was for the 805???

The firmware update actually applies to both Onkyo and Yamaha (several avrs in both lines) for a bug in decoding bitstreamed DTS-MA.

If you don't bitstream audio to the avr then this is a non-issue (like for me, cuz I use a PS3 for my BD player and it won't bitstream the lossless formats).

There are some BD titles that cause a loud 'impulse' to the speaker outputs - some owners have reported speaker damage due to this "bomb". Check out the avsforum.com and search for the "DTS BOMB" thread.

I agree - there will be proponents and detractors for either the 1800 or the 805. Seems like there is no such thing as the perfect avr - any avr on the market will have some quirk or limitation. Again - go check out all the threads in the audio/amp section of the avsforum as there are threads covering practically each and every avr out there with the good and the bad being reported.

I think either will sound fine with the OP's set up.

However, most here would agree that the RTIA5s would benefit with an external amp to give them more headroom to really start to open up at mid/high volumes.

Me? I do own an V1800 (see setup in my sig line).

I'm quite happy with it! Solid and sexy! :p

    I got that exact setup

    onkyo 805
    rti a5
    csi a4
    rti a1

and the Onkyo does a great job with these speakers. I at one point bought a adcom 7000
thats 135watts@8 ohms x 5 and ended up selling it because i didn't notice any difference in sound quality between the two.

That setup is very easy to push and no matter which one you pick it's going to sound great. You may be able to get the Onkyo for a lot cheaper so take that into consideration.

Onk 805 refurb at ecost $550 (when in stock)
ecost is an auth reseller. I got mine there and it came in pristine condition (and even had the remote and stickers which they said it wouldn't)
    {no affil.}
I'm happy with my 805-I'd consider another for the cost, Note right now I'm using it as a pre - I have a separate amp.
Note-the sub only gets a signal from the reciever-it will be self powered, so the sub will be the same whether you use an AVR or an ext amp.

On the DTS Bug-I haven't experienced the issue, but then again I never duplicated the cause. I will be updating the firnware soon. As stated, this issue was not specific to the Onkyo line.

If you read the avs forum and i posted here about the 805 blowing my polks. You HAVE to get the update because i did not and i blow my 800.00 epik caliber subwoofer, both rti8 fronts, one fxi3, and a tweeter in my rti4.(i found later more speakers were damaged then i knew when i posted) When i called onkyo they told me they will do nothing about it and i am out the money. I love the 805 and would still recommend to anyone, but if customer service is important to you (like me) then go with denon. I called denon about my onkyo and asked them "if this was a denon what would you have done" their response was "replace everything that was damaged". Im sold so i am selling the 805 and getting a denon 3808. this is just my opinion of course and im sure i am offending someone by saying this. Again for the money the 805 i think is the best deal, and it sounds better than any receiver i have ever had.

Your better off asking someone from like Crutchfield....it's very unlikely that you'll find someone on here that has experience using both.

I own both Onkyo and Yamaha, just not those models.:D

Hey Moe, welcome to Club Polk. First off, next time you have a question specific to your situation, feel free to start your own thread. You kinda thread jacked eventhough this thread is over a year old. I'm not sure how to answer your Bi-Amp question but if I were you I wouldn't have bothered Bi-Amping with an AVR in the first place. If you are talking about running another set of speaker wires from your Surround Back L/R terminals on your AVR to the speakers and removing the stock metal jumper that is between the two sets of binding posts, that is also called Bi-Wiring and IMHO isn't worth the cost of the extra speaker wire. The power is coming from the same amp in the AVR and it's not going to increase the power going to the speaker, nevermind double it. The AVR's amp section only has a certain amount of power to give out, and you probably won't notice much of a difference. I will admit that 805 has a better amp section than my 806, still not enough to notice a big difference. Best way to bring your speakers to life and get the most noticable change would be to add an external amp. As for the Ohm setting on your AVR, IIRC Onkyo doesn't have an 8 ohm setting. It is either 6 Ohms (used for anything between 6 and 16 ohms) and 4 Ohms (used for 4 ohms or more, but less than 6 ohms) See page 45 in your manual for setup on this. I think your best option for the best "high quality" sound would be to explore your options in external amplification. Look into Adcom, Rotel, Emotiva etc. The Adcoms and Rotels are more "old school" and will have a heaftier price tag, but you may get lucky in the used market. The Emotiva's are more "budget friendly" but a new XPA-3 or XPA-5 will still run you around $600 and $800 respectively. Good luck and hope this helps.
