Pre Amp

I was wondering as I sit hear and listen to Stevie Ray Vaughn I don't have a pre amp right-right. But I want to use a amp right-right. So can I use my laptop using a rca y splitter and connect those to the amp and use my laptop as the pre amp?:rolleyes:

    why don't you just buy a preamp? As for as the computer goes,, never thought about it, you could try it,, but I think that I'd have a fire extinguisher handy.

    If I understand you right... and I think this would only work if you were playing a CD or a MP3 file from your laptop.. hook it up the way you described.. and turn the volume on your laptop all the way down.. then bring up the volume slowly... very slow.. or you'll blow out your speakers.. they will be the first thing to go.

    see if it works.. in theory it should.

    No and HELL NO. First it will sound like kakka and 2nd there probably isn't enough voltage from the PC to attenuate.

    Try it if you like, but I wouldn't expect much

    I pluged my laptop into my Fatman ripoff iPod mini tube amp via the headphone output and it sounded like crap. Lots of noise from the laptop. Remember this is an Integrated amp. I would NOT hook it up to an amp direct.

    I wouldn't recommend doing this. You really want to use a line out, not a headphone jack for starters. And line outs don't usually have a volume control associated with them as they are designed to go into a pre-amp.

    Also, the type of media you play will make a big difference. For instance a CD has a very high output level of around 1V-Peak to peak if I remember correctly where a DVD is around 0.4 V-Peak to peak. So a DVD may work, where as soon as you play a CD it could all go up in smoke at the same volume level. This isn't tied to the media, but the actual recording levels, so a CD burned to a DVD would still maintain the same 1V- peak to peak level and still damage your speakers. This is also why some sources are louder than others, although some AGC circuits can be used to overcome this (AGC = Automatic Gain Control) for instance the ipod has one if you use the apple connector (not the headphone jack) for audio out (so I'm told).

    Hope this helps. I wouldn't try it unless replacing equipment is not an issue.
