Polk 10 QUESTIONS?

Wow...Just found this website.... I am amazed at the wealth of knowledge!

I own a pair of Polk 10's, now out of storage, that I purchased in 1977. SN #54385 & #54375
I am pleasantly surprised that people are still using and buying them?
I am aware of the age of this equipment and wonder if it is worth upgrade and investment. ?

I still love the voice quality they have.
Very tight low end that is in need of a high definition sub wolfer to round the sound out a bit.

But what Sub Woofer works well with the Polk 10's?
Any Sub-Woofer suggestions appreciated?

I am really not up to speed on current equipment so please use search-able products name and not just the model numbers.

Don't laugh ... I still use the "Audio Research SP5" pre-amp & the "Quad 405" dumping amp, (100 w rms). All purchased in 1977... ok a small chuckle is allowed.:D

What are your thoughts?

I took a pair of Monitor 10's out of storage at my parents home a few years ago and made a phone call to Polk HQ. After speaking to Ken in Customer Service I joined this forum. Since then I updated the 10's with capacitors, resistors, new Peerless tweeters and applied new veneer to them. I also bought a pair of SDA2a's and a pair of SDA SRSII's which have all been updated as well as a new CD player two amps, one pre-amp, a integrated amp and so on. You have alot of information to read and using the search forum is a great way to gather information. The folks here are also terrific when it comes to assisting you with just about anything ,with-in reason of course.
Keep in mind "**** in **** out" so you will have to figure out what you are looking for in the music you like and try to buy the best sounding equipment for your ears, easier said than done. Again, the forum search and detailed questions to the folks here will get you there. Knowing what kinda budget your looking to stay around helps alot too.

1) Now... why the fug would anyone laugh at an AR SP-5 or a QUAD 405?

2) Why do you want a subwoofer with 10s?

I have an Outlaw LFM1 plus that I use for HT. I decided to hook up a sub with my 10b's for the simple reason that I was afraid I was going to kill them with some of the low freq's that on are on movie tracks now.

If you've seen Cloverfield and aren't in fear of your vintage speakers without a sub, IMHO, you should be.

Shooter was the movie that fially convinced me.

I have located a used SVS 25-31 CS for a fair price ....
but I need to investigate a bit more

OK dumb question time....?
I notice that the subs are either with or without built in amplifiers?

I am looking for a sub woofer to fill in the low end sound of my music listening and enjoy a bit of home theater.
I want fullness of definition and balance of sound out of my 10's & sub.
I am not looking to "low end boom" my windows out.

Since I am using this older equipment ..... 100 w RMS
will my amp have enough to drive my Polk 10's & a sub, or will I need a sub with a built in amp?

You will need a sub with a built in amp. But for the 10's I personally would not use one, especially for music listening.

Why not a clean sub for music ?
I am curious as to your reasoning, Please explain ........

Bass is directional. I don't care what anyone says. Properly driven monitors deliver the goods pretty decently without a sub. A good musical sub set real low can help, but after changing gears to serious 2 channel I really don't care too much for subs in the mix.

Did you notice a difference after updating the Capacitors & Resisters?

Were the tweeters blown or are the Peerless a large sound improvement?

The 10's sound much better with the update of the 20 year old caps and resistors in every way. They always had the Peerless tweeters I just bought new/old replacements. I also ran the RDO-194's in them with great results but I perfer the Peerless. You can't go wrong with either tweeter.
It will be wise to open up your 10's to confirm what drivers are being used and while they are open look at the crossovers and write down the values of the caps and resistors so you have no mistakes.
