Thanks Steve. Its not like I need another receiver but the price was right and it's highly unlikely I will ever find another one locally. Sorry about the awful pics one day perhaps ill figure out how to take a decent picture.
REGARDS SNOWWell, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all -
Pioneer did a great job styling the SX 580 thru 1980....series. I thought the other brands looked cheesey in comparison.Source: Bluesound Node 2i - Preamp/DAC: Benchmark DAC2 DX - Amp: Parasound Halo A21 - Speakers: MartinLogan Motion 60XTi - Shop Rig: Yamaha A-S501 Integrated - Shop Spkrs: Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2

So now that it's 6 years later does this guy want to tell any one how the sx1980 isn't selling for more than that $1200 auction? I randomly stumbled across this thread on a google search and figured I would reply to this comment lol.sucks2beme wrote: »The Cuda will continue to go up in price. Good investment.
A four door AMC Rambler, bad investment.
I don't see this thing going up much higher, but what do I know?
Classic McIntosh or a Marantz model 8, yes.
Shelby Cobra=cool factor extreme. Whole different league. -

I have my own favorite "high-powered" receiver. It's 50wpc at 8 and 60 at 4. Do I think it sounds good enough to be called a coupe or sports car? No. It's a station wagon.
Here' the best response.
I bought a whole nice system for less. And anybody going to ebay to buy a 45 year old
receiver that hasn't been rebuild is in for a rough ride. For those prices, shopping for
non-restored units is a foolish. I can buy stuff like this from a local vintage audio place
for less money, and be assured it's been gone through by a tech."The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. Cosmetically - and FWIW - I prefer the Pioneer SX-xx50 series to the SX-xx80s. Actually, I prefer the last of the blackout-dial Pioneer receivers to either of the later model lines, cosmetically (the SX-*3* series, up through the SX-1010).

oh, and... I ain't talkin' cars here! ;-) -
I don't get how somebody will pay $2 or 3k for one of these off fleabay.
The seller throws it in a box, UPS destroys it.
I owned a bunch of stuff back in the 70's, and have had some since.
I'm sure that you and I wouldn't hesitate to buy one at a garage sale.
In retrospect, I think I enjoy the Sansui house sound more than the Marantz or Pioneer.
The Marantz stuff has the better look, other than some Sansui integrateds.
But buying one for $$$$$$ isn't going to happen. Try $20."The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. But it does me no injury for my neighbour to say there are twenty gods, or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg." --Thomas Jefferson -

I agree 100% - well... maybe except for "Marantz... has the better look"... certainly flashier, but 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder' and de gustibus non est disputandum :-)
There are still bargains to be found, and, as Louis Pasteur said (albeit probably in French!) "chance favors the prepared mind".
This guy, in good working order, was $5 at a garage sale in my old neighborhood in MA. I did a double-take when the seller named her price... and she said "Why? Do you want to pay more?" "No, five dollars will be fine, thank you. Just checking."
EDIT: FWIW, all of my Marantzes were foundlings - except for the Model Twenty-Six I have; that one I will admit to paying $10 for at our annual town fleamarket one year. -
"No, but it would absolutely kill me to pay more than $5 for it."
Fixed that for you. -
What do you take me for? I'd have gone fifteen, no problemo, sir.

This guy from Audiokarma joined just to give me a jab.
He owns a sx1980. I wonder how much he paid???"The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. But it does me no injury for my neighbour to say there are twenty gods, or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg." --Thomas Jefferson -
more than five smackers, I reckon...
... and I prefer to think of myself as parsimonious; seems so much nicer than "cheap SOB" :-) -
I hate to say it, but if you're paying ebay prices for an SX-1980 you're either a nut job or so freaking loaded that you can throw your money away and not even feel it.

Hehe if you are referring to me I didn't join "just" to take a jab at you. My main thought was it is amazing how we always think something isn't going to be worth "more" then ebay tends to prove us wrong. Although the word worth may be inaccurate as I think the main reason these pioneer sx receivers are going for so much is all of the people buying and reselling them at crazy high prices thinking that is what they are worth. People keep the prices high by simply asking that much for them, not because the demand is there. I also don't own a 1980 - I do own a 1250 and a 1280 both bought for some what reasonable prices. I am looking in to other receivers to add to my collection but a 1980 isn't one of them unless I find it at a yard sale.

They are worth what people will pay for them. We like them here, but not quite that much.
I've seen people pay more for stuff on ebay that new stuff on the web. So I don't pay much
attention to what stuff sells there for. I still have a few vintage pieces around, but in the
end there's just too much good stuff made after the 70's, and you don't have to spray it down with cleaner every time you break them out."The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. I have some old Pioneer amps and receivers. Sounds great tied to my monitor 10b's
