Well, wish me luck, I start a new job on Monday

After 12 years at Lockheed Martin, I'm hanging up my defense industry boots for a while and going to work in the private sector. I was given a good offer by Towers Perrin in Center City Philadelphia (next to city hall) to go to work for them in their web engineering department to work on web space security for them.

It's not much of a departure in the kind of work I will be doing. In fact, I will be able to use all of the things I learned over the past decade in one project. There are other benefits like going from a 30 mile daily commute to a 3 mile daily commute cause I can take the train in to the city since the train stops about 2 and a half blocks from the building.

I'm excited and nervous. Starting any new job is always a risk. But all I can do is my best and hope for the best.

My life has changed drastically in the past two months with a huge chunk of that change coming two Thursdays ago. For once, after a loooong time, my future looks bright. Some of you know what I've been going through and it honestly feels good to finally see the edge of the forest.

Here's hoping it all keeps going well!

And here's hoping they won't ever give you a Chevy for a company car ;)
So, are you willing to put forth a little effort or are you happy sitting in your skeptical poo pile?

Yeah, I kinda am but that's not the reason I'm leaving. I got shoved under a bad manager, IMO. But hey, when the program you are working on is almost single handedly held up by yourself and you get craptastic reviews, no raises and passed over for a promotion 2+ years running, it kinda motivates you to go get something else. I've been looking since January when my manager told me that I had to improve or he was going to "let me go". When I asked what I needed to do to improve, he basically told me that was my problem and I needed to figure it out. Meanwhile, for my yearly reviews I'm being gaged against these standards that I supposedly have to figure out for myself and getting the short end of the stick. Even though I'm logging 500+ hours of overtime a year making sure that impossible build schedules are met and mutating policies and requirements are kept in check and held up just so the rest of my group can take credit at an early morning meeting that I missed 'cause I was in late due to over sleeping from the 14 hour day I had the day before. Every one else got in early 'cause they left at 5pm to go home 'cause they were "done for the day".

Yeah, all of Lockheed wasn't like that at all. Just the department I got put in to. That's pretty much why I'm leaving. It's just nice that the move came with a sweet raise and other ancillary benefits.

That was just uncalled for and so not funny on so many levels.

Yes, I will be. It's been planned for months, just because I start a new job doesn't mean my plans go out the window. They can accommodate one day whether I have vacation time or not. If it comes down to it, I might not feel so good that day and I'll have to make an appointment with "Dr. Polk".
