Going to Colorado in October - what to do

Anyone know anything about Glenwood Springs? Any other suggesstions for the October timeframe?

It's only the largest hot springs swimming pool (and only a few hours away from the world's second largest ball of twine) Going through GS from Pueblo would give you the opportunity of going through Aspen, another nice drive and the opp of seeing some celebs if you're in to that sort of thing. Some good places to eat but I can't remember any of them. If you end up in Durango, eat at Oscar's for breakfast"The secret of happiness is freedom. The secret of freedom is courage." Thucydides

Glenwood Springs is great place to stay, and about an hour to Aspen.
In Colo Springs the Air Force Academy is a must, Garden of the Gods is beautiful. if you stop downtown and find the civic center, you see a statue of my late uncle, it's the "Pumpkin Man".
Be warned, the pine beetle is decimating the LodgePole Pine trees (above 8000ft). It's worse to the north of I-70. Some spots already have a 90% forest loss. Only two things can kill the ****, fire, and a week of -30 to -40 degree weather at night, as the beetle has a form of anti-freeze in its system. Pray for the cold snap this winter.
Just a correction, the newer version of The Shining was filmed at The Stanley in Estes Park, as the hotel was Stephen King's inspiration. The Nicholson version was filmed at Mt Hood lodge.Review Site_ (((AudioPursuit)))

You're right, my bad. Stephen king was inspired to write the novel when he stayed there and it was featured in the tv miniseries. (and also in Dumb and Dumber)

The origin of the name is disputed. On one hand it was said to cost a million dollars per mile to build in the 1920's. On the other it is said to have a million dollars of gold ore as fill dirt per mile as it was built.
The original Million Dollar highway was the twelve miles south of Ouray through the Uncompahgre Gorge to the summit of Red Mountain Pass.
It's a good trip. It won't be quite as exciting in October since there won't be 50 RV's screaming by or slow crawling around the highway. Excellent views.
Depending on how exciting you want to make the trip. Traveling north from Silverton to Ouray allows you to hug the inside of curves; traveling south from Ouray to Silverton perches you on the outside edge of the highway.
Make sure you take some pictures and share some of them.

A couple miles east of Glenwood Springs is a neat hike to Hanging Lake. It is short, only about a mile, but it is like doing a stairmaster most of the way. VERY cool at the ending, tho, with a small lake basically carved into the side of the hill. If you go up, continue up the trail to the stream above the lake, and there is a falls that you can walk in behind, and you can look down onto the lake from above. The lake is pretty full of cutthroat trout."Don't forget to change your politician. They are like diapers they need to be changed regularly, and for the same reason." -
I'm originally from Colorado, grew up in Carbondale just outside of Aspen.. Glenwood springs is an awesome place and it's only an hour from Aspen which is a fantastic little town.. There is nothing in Winter Park to see, it's still just a skiing destination and very little would be going on that time of year.. Estes Park is also a cool tourist trap although I would imagine many of the businesses would be closed that time of year.. Grand Lake is also one of my favorite places but also would probably be pretty scaled back that time of year.. They also have the worlds best putt putt golf course in Grand Lake

Big wimp, we do that drive yearly (My wife's from Silverton). Closest call she had was getting hit by an avelanche...
Biggest real danger is morons in RV's on that road unless you have a habit of driving on the shoulder.
My suggestion for a 5 day trip would be to head across the South of the state and go out to Mesa Verde and Durango. Turn North and go through Silverton/Ouray/Telluride areas (Black Canyon of the Gunnison, MDH) into Grand Junction or Over the Grand Mesa (if you like camping) to Glennwood springs (hot pools, Hanging lake). Hit Aspen or Avon/Vail on your way back to Denver. Stop off in Golden for a tour of two breweries and then visit the Alpine slide... Going white water rafting tomorrow outside co springs and then some cool waterfall hikes here again in the park. Plan on hiting the alpine slide and human maze in winterpark on Friday!
