    The count is:

    U.S.A.-17G, 18S, 22B= 57 Total
    China- 27G, 13S, 9B= 49 Total
    Australia- 8G, 10S, 11B= 29 Total

1 medal per team, per event. I guess we can't be TOO greedy.:o

Mark Spitz only competed in two events... and won his medals.

I think Phelps is competing in all swimming events. more events.. more chances for gold baby. ;)

No way. When you factor in the drag coefficient, and added 1/2 pound of facial hair, couldn't be done:eek:

I watched Mark Spitz being interviewed in the booth during the twins game, when that photo was taken of him in the twins jersey.
He sounded like he was struggling to accept the fact that his fame was about to evaporate. He must have used the phrase "when I won my 7 gold medals" a half a dozen times (unprompted) Quite a turn off clinging to the past like that.
And I agree 100%. Phelps is a class act. Tough to come across these days.

    Ahhh, the 70s .. when Old-Glory speedos weren't just for ****.
Nowadays, male swimmers wear those girly tights. oh well. ;)

The amazing thing is that he is still so young, only 23,
he has at least two more Olympic games in his future.

Not taking anything away from Phelps, as he's undoubtedly the best swimmer in the world. I think it's a little odd how someone can compete in 8 different events and win 8 gold medals. Why are there 8 events he can compete in? Do we really need that many swimming events? Beach volleyball = 1 chance at a gold. Archery = 1 chance at a gold. Almost all Olympians only have one chance to win a gold while Phelps has 800% more chances? Interesting...

Swimming, like track, h as various events because usually if someone is good at one they're not quite as good at another. In track a good sprinter is usually not as good at hurtles and vice versa; the fastest guy in a 100m dash may not have the stamina that the fastest guy in the 800m race has.

Swimming is similar; the best guy using one stroke usually isn't the best with another stroke, though both are valid competitions.

There's not much variety in the way you can play a game like beach volleyball, but there is a beach volleyball team and a regular volleyball team, and nothing (that I know of) prevents people from participating in both; it's a similar concept.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Well...theres seveal different strokes, several different relays, and several different lengths.

Theres several sports that are the same way, gymnastics and track comes to mind.

So far, my favorite part about Phelps is he may live up to be a decent role model for kids. He's made a couple of mistakes already, but all in all he seems like a good kid with a very bright future.

I think it has something to do with 12000 calories a day. Who wouldn't perform better by eating a pound of pasta and a whole pizza before bed?

If eating was an Olympic competition, I think Phelps would dominate as well.

I’m glad he won it all. I still think the 2nd race was the best of all though. The big French dude claims they would smash the Americans, only to be disgraced when Lezak comes from behind for the win. Outstanding!

That **** 'stache deserve a gold all by itself.
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

I would agree with this. I really like that he's someone who used the fact people that picked on him as motivation rather than turning it into anger. Just like with the athletes competing with him in this Olympics -- he used it to drive him. I also like that this overdiagnosis of ADD/ADHD is further being proven to often be a crock and that these kids can do great things when they channel their energy in the right places rather than relying on a pill.

He pretty much gave the middle finger to all of the people who said he couldn't do it. I love that.
