AVG 8.0 - .bin file missing?

Anybody else have this error? I just updated AVG to 8.0 on two of our computers and while updating the virus definitions it stopped the process with an error saying a .bin file is missing.

Any work arounds? What is a .bin file? Is it in the program, meaning I should reinstall it? Or an error in the update file?

I did a quick google search, and just in case anyone else has noticed this issue and is wondering what's going on, here's what I found from a post on the AVG forum:
UPDATE .BIN error information... Aug 16th 2008

Currently the update for AVG Free v8 is corrupted... you will have to wait for AVG Technologies to address the issue with the update.

Reporting the issue again by other users here will not do any good util it is resolved.

The updates that your AVG currently have will still provide the protection it is setup to detect. In otherwords, just getting this update will not make your AVG Free ineffective and as soon as AVG Tech resolves the issue you will be able to update to the current virus definitions at that time.

    Thanks for the info,

To be honest with you guys, yesterday I downgraded back to Windows 2000 Professional and Norton. Although everyone here was telling me how great AVG is, mine seemed to be corrupted and gave me a few problems.

So for now I'm testing out Win2k and Norton... Norton seems to run much better on Win2k.

Interesting. I've been using AVG free on three computers so far (of mine...my parents' four computers are also running it), and besides this issue with this one update file, we've never had any problems.

Aside from the same error as what you had, I also had issues with the automatic updates and that's why I made the switch back to Win2k/Norton.

They probably googled the problem. This thread is the third hit on the list if you google "bin file missing".

Hmm, AVG 7.5 is doing this for me as well. If it weren't so buggy I'd be using it on my 2k machine, but Norton seems to run fine on Win2k (knock on wood) so I'm sticking with that for now...

Dangit, I already changed my OS and antivirus so I don't feel like messing around with AVG/XP anymore.

I can see ditching AVG if you've been having problems, but downgrading to 2000 is .... I'll be nice and say ill-advised. Don't get me wrong, i loved Win2k and avoided XP for as long as I could, but more and more software is requiring XP or higher these days and having to deal with those limitations is not even close to worth it.

Really, based on past threads with your various computer problems, maybe computers just aren't for you. :)
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

XP was/is a memory hog on my home PC, which is a Pentium II 350. I just couldn't stand waiting for everything - even on a fresh install, XP took up a great deal of RAM and HDD space.

Attached is a pic of my Device Manager:

Most of my hardware is just too old for XP, especially the Pentium II processor and dated GPU.

Ah, I didn't realize your PC was ancient.

Considering all the nifty toys you've talked about buying yourself around here, maybe it's time to drop 500 bucks and get yourself a nice PC, eh ? :)

That computer is almost 10 years old!! Maybe it is time to update it? Prices right noware great, I just bought 4GB of Mushkin memory for about $65.

I'm on a student budget and I really don't want to buy a new PC until my current one dies :)
