What is Twitter and does anyone here use it?

Ok.. my company just started using Twitter (some kind of web blog update internet thingy). Text messages can only contain up to 140 characters. I think Facebook uses it.
Anyone here us it? Every heard of it? IF you've used it, for what purpose? Do you like it or know anyone who uses it?

I just took a road trip vacation out on the west coast, and used it to give status updates of the trip to anyone who cared.
For the most part it's pretty pointless - just another time waster - but I"ve seen a few useful applications. Most notably a TV critic using it as a sort of "live blog" during a conference.If you will it, dude, it is no dream. -

I signed up for it, used it for two days, and not once since.
