Spelling? Who Needs It?

A UK college professor says we should just ignore common mistakes.
First, it's disgusting that kids going into college are misspelling such common words. "Ignor" is not a mistake a college student should make; it's not even a mistake a 4th grader should make. And yet it is apparently one of the top 20 misspelled words. A few of the 'ie'/'ei' problems maybe I can understand, but not "ignor" or "oppertunity".
Second, this is an institute of higher learning we're talking about here. The point of college is to learn, not to be told "do what you want, your mistakes are no big deal."
And finally, one of the "suggested alternate spellings" is "there" for "their". THOSE ARE TWO DIFFERENT WORDS!
The dumbing down and babying of the world is almost complete. I hope you're all happy.

In the case of the article, yes, that's what he's advocating. If you will it, dude, it is no dream. -
That's pretty strange. Even my APP teacher didn't give us a break on the spelling of body parts and medical terms and some of those can get kind of rough to memorize. We certainly would have gotten **** for using there instead of their or spelling ignore as ignor....hell, why not just use internet lingo and write through as thru and to as 2

I hade it whin peepul ignor they're spelng mestaks

I splell jus fine. Ask me sisder.~ In search of accurate reproduction of music. Real sound is my reference and while perfection may not be attainable? If I chase it, I might just catch excellence. ~

Not some members of this forum, sadly...
PS. For all the members who aren't intelligent enough to be able to spell, there is a spell-check feature that you can use But I guess it shouldn't surprise me that you missed that also. -

Firefox has a built in spell checker, but it does highlight some words that are spelled correctly.
Too bad there isn't also a grammar check."He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you." Friedrich Nietzsche -
Why you says?~ In search of accurate reproduction of music. Real sound is my reference and while perfection may not be attainable? If I chase it, I might just catch excellence. ~

10 years ago I had a french spell checker that did grammar as well. It wasn't perfect, but fixed all obvious deficiencies.

I'm standing up and cheering; clapping my hands loudly and throwing in some whistles . . . great post Bob.
I hope I spelled everything correctly as I only have 10 minutes to not look like a dumb ****. -

regards snowWell, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all -
How old is the professor, 22
Unfortunately a lot of changes are coming as the new generations work their way into society. -
