When I quit it was paying about 10.00 hr & alot of times that included beer, several people cut it by the stick which is about 38 cents put in the barn. What you do is drop tobacco sticks first, then you cut the plant with a knife, then you hand it back to a another guy he uses a spike, puts the spike on that stick & rams the plant on the stick like threading a needle. After you put about 5-6 plants you repeat, after a few days of curing you put in a very tall barn which I always hated.Very hard work till you get use to it.

It does seem like a lot of work for only $10/hour.

I live on a farm (sort of) and I've filled the barn with hay before but I certainly haven't done anything as hard as cutting tobacco by hand.

I haven't cut, but have hung baccey in the curing houses. Quite a climb to get to the top rows. You get pretty sticky too, but the aroma is wonderful.

I hate at the top when housing, scared of heights but the higher you are the less tobacco you get.And yes the Mexicans cut most of it now. Most farmers dont grow it anymore since the goverment buy out program,& other people just rent theres out.Talking about the Mexicans, they could put away the cold beer,I dont see how they did it I would be flat on my back trying to work & drink,I liked the beer after we where done.

Pretty dangerous work, if I'm not mistaken...
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore
