I am about to ship my LSi9s to my apartment back up in Columbia. The box was only opened to make sure the speakers were in good shape and placed back in and taped back up. The original box and packaging are still in 10/10 condition. For a 2 day transit that is insured via Fedex, will my speakers be ok? I can't find another box that is bigger to double box!

There's no guarantee, but they SHOULD be ok.

Original boxes were made to handle some minor to medium bumps, so most times they'll arrive just fine.

    Good luck

Usually when I go to Kinko's and use Fedex, they have a large assortment of boxes that can be purchased along with packing material. Personally, I'd double box along with bubble wrapping the existing stock ones. This also keeps the thieves from exactly knowing visually what's in the box too.

You should be okay. Use the original packaging and stuff additional paper / foam in any crevices to make sure the speakers are packed tight.

I found a double box that is big enough for the polks. Now my next and final question -- what is a good way to ship a subwoofer without the original boxes? It is a HSU STF-2. It weighs 44lbs. What kind of packing material should protect the woofer? Are double boxes a must?

How far is it being shipped? Can you contact the manufacturer to get a replacement box? I'd be more than afraid to ship something large, heavy, and somewhat fragile in anything other than the manufacturer packaging.

Its Texas to Missouri. Usually takes 2 days on fedex ground. I won't have enough time to get a replacement box. I do plan on double boxing. Also using bubble wrap all around the actual sub and peanuts to fill up the space. Will that work?

I would definitely go with harder foam than peanuts. Peanuts don't offer much support, they just kind of fill space.

I'm not sure when you can get the foam. I've broken up a few styrofoam coolers and used them, but that's messy and not optimal. I'd try to find some 2-3" thick foam pieces to put between the bubble wrapped sub and box(es).

DO NOT use peanuts or bubble wrap. You want to place the item in a heavy plastic bag or the like. Buy the styrofoam type insulation, it comes in sheets, from Home Depot or Lowes. Cut pieces to fit the carton, lining the bottom, sides and top. Make sure the item is packed tight. Then, place that box inside of another and fill any space with more of the sheet material. Make sure the cartons (boxes) are at least double wall construction. All this takes extra time, material and money, but it's the only way to do it. Two days or two weeks of shipping time does not matter, your package will get the crap beat out of it in the first hour, plan on it!

Also, it's a good idea is to take pictures as you pack. That way, in case there is a damage claim, you have evidence as to how well it was packed.

Don't forget to insure it, but unless it's packed to withstand a bomb blast, it won't help you.

For something that I don't have the original box for I like to put the item in a plastic bag, then wrap it in a few layers of big bubble wrap. Then place it in a relatively close-fitting box with all sides having 1"+ styrofoam (styrofoam doesn't have to extend the entire length) and fill the empty space with peanuts. Then double-box it and put either styrofoam or some other foam-like padding on each side (again, doesn't have to extend the entire length of each side just needs to keep the inner box stationary which peanuts won't do). Fill the empty space with peanuts and call it a day. Hasn't failed me yet.

I recently had a sub shipped to me and it was single boxed with peanuts. I'm now waiting on ups to finish the claim as the feet were shoved into the box completely broken and rendered the sub useless and the box resonated and had air leaks at every seem.
It also had several damaged areas all over it from shipping it like this.
I also had some polk speakers the rti a5's shipped in orginal box and double boxxed and no damage was done.
Had some surrounds the rti6 shipped in orginal box only and they speakers were ok but by miracle only. The box had a hole the size of a softball in it but the speakers made it out ok.
Had some smaller stuff shipped in orginal box only and it was ok but again the box was beat up.
If it were me i'd at least double box to help insure the wellbeing of your gear after seeing first hand how badly shippers handle these boxs.
