What amp is he goin to run the sub with? That boss amp won't handle much as they are fairly cheap units and often do not perform anywhere near what they say it will on paper.
For instance that JL 12" w04 would be a complete waste on a Boss amp as it won't push enough power to allow the sub to do much in the end.

How big/loud are you looking? ebay would be a good place to shop around for some stuff. But knowing how big a setup you want and what your price cutoff is would help with picking out some decent gear.

Polk Audio MM1040 END OF STORY. Think of subs this way a 8 inch being a ferrari enzo rely fast car. A 10 inch being a normal coupe car. 12 inch being a suv. And so on. The bigger the car the slower it accelerates and the slower it slows down. A 10 inch is the most efficient being like a honda civic. JL is a great sub as well it's just that I would'nt go with a 12.

PLUS IT IS A SMALL CAR HE DOES NOT NEED A LOT OF BASS. A good amp with that sub would be
    Alpine MRP-M450
    or a
    Polk Audio PA400.1
Just google them or go to www.crutchfield.com and look them up that is were I buy all my stuff. If within 30 days he dose not like it you can send it back they pay shipping and you can get something else or a complete refund.

buy an older fosgate for less than 100 bucks all day on the bay ... all my kids have one or two .... the older amps just seem more robust. and I havent had a single problem with power Ive bought 4 60.2 fosgate amps in that ugly grey color .... a 500s all of them were less than 70.00 shipped. and they got PLENTY of POWER! for a 12
