Meet my new SDA's

I wouldn't do it with a speaker shaped like SDA's, they're easier to tip over with only 3 points."He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you." Friedrich Nietzsche

I have 3 on mine and they are quite stable because of the width.I like speakers that are bigger than a small refrigerator but smaller than a big refrigerator:D -
I put mine on 1/2" thick floor tiles from Lowes as Steveinaz suggested. Seems to ever so slightly tighten up the base. Thought about spikes, but just didn't want to drill into the oak ladened bottoms.

Many options, some people like to couple some decouple. Some couple to the floor and some to mass.
For my speakers I found coupling to mass works well. I needed stands so I built 12in TNT Sandblasters (sand box) as stands. So the speakers are coupled to a hard wood base which is floated on a box of sand. Vibration travels through the stand and out the spikes to the board, which is then absorbed by the sand before it hits the floor. In the past I have used concrete pavers, but prefer the sand boxes. -
I have been thinking about this myself. My room is in the basement and I have carpet over concrete slab. When I had RTi10's they sounded more lively and tighter with the speaker sitting on a 16"X16" tile on the carpet.
Right now I have my SDA's spiked through the carpet to the slab. I have not tried the slate tiles under the spiked SDA's yet because I have made to many changes to my rig and room recently and I am waiting for things to burn in and establish a base l;ine for a meaningful comparison.
My head tells me the SDA's should sound better spiked to the concrete floor but we shall see in the next couple weeks I will try the slate tiles again.

Hmmmm, decisions decisions!!!! I'll probably go with the spikes, it seems like the simplest way to go, these aren't big budget decisions so if I'm not happy with the spikes I could always try something different.
Meanwhile, back on the subject of burning in my new crossovers, I am definitely liking what I'm hearing. I'm at 114 hours and counting right now. I had a nice listening session last night at around the 105 hour mark, and was really psyched with what I was hearing.
I'm not in a good position to do any comparing of the 1C's to the 2B's at this point. In addition to getting new speakers, I've also loaded up the room with GIK acoustic treatments, so it's difficult to isolate any differences in sound as being due to the 1C's themselves, or due to the room having better acoustics now. Once the caps burn in, I'll do a bit of back and forth with the 1C's and the 2B's and try to detail the differences.
My reference recording is always the MFSL version of Dark Side. I just know every piece of that recording inside and out. So of course I gave that a listen, and was really happy with the imaging I was seeing. The lead in to Time, where there are footsteps walking back and forth across the soundstage, reveals a lot. There was no sense of moving from one speaker to the other. With my eyes closed, I definitely got the sensation that the footsteps were moving evenly across the soundstage, the speakers themselves completely disappeared within the image. What's more, at the end of those footsteps, I clearly perceived some wonderful depth - the footsteps were no longer walking across the horizontal soundstage, they were walking back to a deeper point in the soundstage. Extremely impressive. But again, I'm sure that the improvements in imaging had a lot to do with the acoustic treatments - no more sound bouncing all over the room.
The 1C's are producing beautiful extensions in the highs, with a lot of bass impact as well. Very noticeable in the drums. Nick Mason can never be accused of being one of the top drummers of all times, but at the same time he is "just right" for Floyd. The kick of the bass drum and the dynamic range of the cymbals produce a beautiful effect of the bass "pushing" the sound of the cymbal. Just wonderful.
At the 100+ hour mark, I'm not noticing any veil to the sound, everything has opened up nicely. I think the improvements from here on in will be quite marginal, but I still want to give a timed push to 200 hours before I stop paying attention to how long they've been under a load. If my math is correct, that'll be Thursday night unless I need to power them off for any reason.
In short, these are really, really nice speakers.Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance. -
Another kick-**** listening session tonight, at around the 175 hour mark. Just brilliant new speakers, I am so psyched about these. Gotta love craigslist.
Just jammed to Zappa Hot Rats (Ryko), now enjoying Alan Parsons Project I Robot (MFSL).
These speakers are so tight, so detailed, so much punch, but they have a beautiful airiness to them.
I'll be at 200 hours tomorrow. I think they're probably done right now, the next day is more psychological than anything else. I think these Sonicaps are pretty well-done as it is right now.
I Robot is such a great album. So I'm outta here, back to jammin'! Later... :cool:Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance. -

Yep,
Yep,
and
Yep.
Do they give you slightly more than the 2B TL?"Appreciation of audio is a completely subjective human experience. I think so, but not sure. I just got all these new GIK panels in the room, so I need to do some listening to the 2B TL's with the new accoustic treatments before I can really answer that.Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance.

It's also going to be a while before I can answer that, because I'm leaving for vacation this weekend, then I'm away on business trip for three days the following week...Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance.
