The preliminary team sports always start early. It is the only way they can fit in the round-robin tournaments. Soccer in China just does not fit. Norway against the US is a huge game on about 4 other continents. I seemed like there was about a thousand fans at the game. You could actually hear the players talking on the field. Just not as exciting with out a crowd.

LOL....I had my first shoulder surgery during the last summer Olympics. I was so much zoned out from the pain that I found myself watching Olympic walking because I could not sleep. If you watch the Olympics as a sport only, and do not consider the individual stories and emotions yes it is boring. But, so is watching a bunch of millionaire brats smack a leather covered twine ball around a diamond if you do not have some sort of attachment.

Some of the summer sports are interesting. They don't always show the field and outdoor sports like rifle shooting, archery and such and then there is the kayaking and stuff too. I'm not much for track and field but I like watching the baseball. All the Caribbean island states field impressive teams and watching the U.S. beat up on other countries in basketball (provided the team takes it seriously unlike last time) can be kinda fun too in a twisted sort of way.

I'd rather watch the Summer X-Games though. Much more interesting.

Now Winter Olympics, yeah, I'll be glued to the tube for most of it. Except figure skating. I can do without that. But even curling is cool, it's like bocci ball on ice with high strung Scandinavians!

I found track-and-field events to be boring. I'd love to see judo or karate broadcasted. Of course, being a high school badminton player (a bad one though), I'd love to see Olympic badminton competition. I know....people laugh at badminton....but it's the seond most-played sport in the world and getting hit by that "birdie" (@ over 200mph) will definitely make you scream "Mommy!" :D

Karate is not in the Olympics. You will need to settle for Judo or Taekwondo. I hope Karate never gets into the Olympics. I also agree that badminton would be great to watch. Why would they show Olympic walking and not these better sports? I always tune in and see track events or swimming. Thats all they show.

I NEVER talk politics.... but Bush checking his watch during the Parade of Nations is absolutely, pooply, pricely, BEYOND awesome. Right or Left.

Either way, get a sense of humor.
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

I am not big on the opening ceremonies of Olympics, but GD did the Chinese put on a show tonight. It was absolutely unbelievable. Costas put it best as the final torch bearer was being led around the top of the BirdsNest on a guide wire he said "You can go ahead and officially retire the Olympic Ceremonies trophy."

I didn't see the opening ceremony, but I've lived in China for extended periods since the time they won the Olympic bid (summer 2001???) and this does not surprise me at all.

Anyway, its not just that the government wanted to put on a great show. Pretty much the entire populace sees this as China's coming out party. I've never seen so much unity amongst a group of people (mind you the population is 1.3 billion and counting, more than 4 times that of the U.S). Sure, critics will say that your average Chinese citizen is brainwashed and that this is a result from a state-controlled media. But, no matter what the means, there is an intense patriotism there and nearly everybody wants to be a part of the project to strengthen the nation and improve the view of the nation in the world's eyes...

I tend to really get into this topic because I'm working my Ph.D in Chinese history, so forgive me for the extra analysis. But I think you can trace this back historically. Ever since China was humiliated by the French, British and other Western powers in the 19th century and, worst of all, the Japanese in the War of 1895/96, they have been struggling with the reputation of a once-great empire that had fallen, owing to the superiority of Western technology. Much of the 20th century was also a humiliating one and things got worse under Mao (1949-76), but now in the post-Mao Economic Reform Period they have been going full steam ahead to re-secure their position as first a regional power (pushing Japan aside) and then a world power and the prestige that it affords. In addition to the Olympics, the Worlds Fair will be held in Shanghai in 2010; when I was in Shanghai 3 years ago I was already seeing all kinds of public advertising related to this.

Nice post Norm. I think it was their goal tonight, and they achieved it with mighty success. I still cannot get over how great it was. This will surely be talked about for years.
