MM2084 Subwoofer - Should I get it or something else?

Well, thanks to Bigaudiofanatic and Macleod, I have a brand new pair of MMC570's in my truck. They sound great, but now it's time to buy a decent subwoofer.

I am considering getting the MM2084 b/c it matches well with my current amp (Soundstream Tarantula Series 480.4 sending 240w bridged). I know I should probably go for a 10" sub, but I am not changing my amp anytime soon so 240w is all I got.

I have a couple of questions:

1. Does the MM2084 really play smoothly down to 26hz per the specs, or does it really start to bottom out after 40hz? Can I expect to be happy with the low end? Considering the amp I have, should I opt for a different non-Polk 8" (like the ID8) or a more efficient 10" than the MM2104?

2. I plan on placing this sub in the "extra" of the extra cab in my Ford Ranger against the back wall. I am concerened about cancellation in such a small area. Should I face the sub against the back wall? If so, is there any limitation on how close I should put the face of the woofer to the back wall?

Go with the MM2104. The 8 will work just fine but the bigger 10 will give you more output and better low end extension. Plus, if and when you upgrade your amp, you wont have to upgrade your sub. Besides, the MM2104 is one of the best performing subs you can get for the money. I ran it for 2 years in SQ competition and it always did everything I needed it to. Played the 25 Hz notes on the MECA disc with ease and got the 18 Hz note on the IASCA disc as well with only 300 watts.

As for cancellation, actually youre going to get a lot more bass than you would in a car. The smaller size of the interior of the car means that your 240 watts will sound more like 500.

I'm glad to hear cancellation will not be an issue. I have heard people say that they have "never been able to get the full impact of their sub" due to the cab size of a pickup, but have always wondered if it was their setup or placement more than issues with the space of a cab.

As for the MM2104, while I am sure your advice is spot-on, I'm still on the fence, only because I have already created a .35 cu. ft sealed sub box with spare MDF lying around. I had to borrow tools, get home depot to cut wood, etc. etc. A job that simple is a pain without the proper tools!

Any chance I could get by with the .35 cu ft enclosure for the MM2104? Maybe if I added some Polyfill?

In this case I am going to agree with mac. Go with the 10 it will be well balanced with your MMC570's in your truck. As far as how far away from the back wall if you go that route i would put it as far away as you can it will allow the sub to "breath" easier. But either way you go you should not have to worry about cancellation. As for the box you can get away with it but it MAY starve the sub. But not sure have to look into it. As for the Hz you it will play them comfortably.

I wouldnt put a 10 in the .35 box. Thats just too small and it will choke off the sound. If you dont want to build another box then get the 8. Itll sound just fine just that the 10 will have some more output and hit lower easier than the 8.
