I Sonic AM reception

Hey OK I know the Isonic its all about sound quality - and it is very good. Works great in the bedroom fed by a Squeezebox. But I like to wake up to AM news (I'm OLD what can I say), and the AM reception even with the external antenna is horrible. Bad, bad background hiss on all frequencies. My $20 RCA alarm clock is better and not just because it has no frequency response. And I was dissapointed because at least one users review commented how good AM reception was. So is this a defective unit or is the AM reception simply poor?
