Barrett's relatively new .419 cal model 99 has a cold barrel accuracy out to that range (2,500 yds @ sea level 72F), of course that's not hitting a moving target though. Still, I can not imagine haw still you would have to be and HTH do you even see someone that far away?

Nine-tenths of the rights he bellows for are really privileges and he does nothing to deserve them. We not only acquired a vast population of morons, we have inculcated all morons, old or young, with the doctrine that the decent and industrious people of the country are bound to support them for all time.-Menkin

Wind factors are huge, which is really what makes it impressive.

4.5 seconds of bullet travel. If the target sneezes you missed. Even 300 yards with my 30-06 wind can screw up a hit.
I wonder how long till they have computer scopes? winds can change a lot from here to there. Up drafts... Amazing.

If any of you guys have played Call of Duty 4 they have a sniper mission where they actually use wind factor. Gives you a small glimpse of how hard it is to do what this guy did even in light winds.

This reminds me of the scene from "Saving Private Ryan', where Barry Pepper's character says something like " just get me within 1.5 miles of Hitler and this war would be all over".:D

That's amazing. One of my friends is a retired Sgt. Major in the Corps and he knew a sniper who shot a kid off his bike from 1 mile away. The kid was an informant who was carrying information back to the enemy.

The sniper's creed - you can run, but you'll only die tired.

My shooting team practices long-distance shooting using 12" steel plates at 1000 yds, using .308 rifles of various types. Easy it ain't!

I'd love to do some long range shooting on a bag with my 06. I always wanted to try boatails at a distance. Have you tried the Sabots. Their speed is pretty, but I think they drop off to quick after around 300yrds.

I use Federal Gold Metal Match 168gr boat tails in my DPMS LR-308. On a good day I can hit the 12" steel plate about 8 out of 10 times at 1000 yds (after the allowed 3 shots to guage the wind!). We won't talk about the bad days!

My favorite one is to put golf balls on tees, then shoot at them from 500 yds out with some type of long-range varmint gun. You stick one of those orange survey flags behind them so you have an indication of the wind.

I recently took a 1lbs rat out of a tree in my backyard with a BB rifle from 10 yards. Does that count?

It does in my book. Did you have the proper tags? In season?

Isn't it always rat season? And I thought you only need tags for 1.5lbs and over... :D

Doug, the BEST match rifle I ever had was built by Clint Fowler. It was built on a Springfield Armory M1A receiver with a Krieger Stainless 10” twist barrel. Hornady 168gr BTHP with 39.5gr of IMR 4895 was my best load. At 100 yards on a rest, you could put follow up shots through the same hole.

IIRC Clint was the first one to double lug the M14/M1A receiver, allowing use of the stock op rod with no mods needed. Back then he built rifles for the Marine shooting team. Keep the screws tight, and you wouldn’t loosen the glass bedding. I still have our correspondence (remember letters). I also had an ART IV sniper scope for it.

Most fun gun that would rattle your eye teeth was a M1A on rock and roll with the standard stock (with the drop at the heel). Control was much better with the M14E2 stock (AKA the Buck Rogers stock). I had a FFL with a Class III back then, so it was legal.

Doug, you must have known Sparky (RIP) from Buffalo Rock in Ottawa?

Rich - I recognize Clint's name, however all of my shooting is done back in IA and the rest of my team is ex-military and most of us have been on the volunteer reserve deputy forces in various counties. We shoot at Camp Dodge in IA, and at the Isaac Walton league in Ames, as well as on the 2000 yd range we have on the farm in IA. I've never had the pleasure to shoot down at the Ottawa facility or in the high power matches such as those at Camp Pendelton.

Very nice guns Rich! You can still own a class III firearm in IA if you have the right signatures.

Thanks! I sold most of them off when I lived in Aurora. In Illinois, back in the 80's anyway, you had to have a FFL and Class III license to legally have select fire weapons.

Sparky was quite a fellow. He was an ex-Marine armorer. Lots of stories to tell when we hook up again.;)
