I have noticed something that a lot of us younger generations can not spell as well as some of the older why because we grew up with this "great invention" called spell check I and many others can not spell that well because the program does it for us. An right now as I am typing this and look back is says that i have misspelled well only two words on this one. But you get what I am saying technology is making us more lazy.

I disagree. Spell checking is an incredibly useful tool but it's only effective if someone cares enough to proof their document in the first place. There are a lot of bad spellers, bad writers, and bad speakers out there and while I don't know why, I don't think it's because of spell checking technology.

Kids these days may be lazy, but in my opinion it's not because of the technology. Technology could make them learn faster and write better if they cared enough to use take to time to use it that way.

And spell checkers aren't everything. You misspelled many words in your post that didn't get caught, because they are either just the wrong word for the context or wrong grammatically. Grammar checkers help, but there's still no substitute for taking the time to proof.

    Yes, proofreading is the key.

I'm 34 years old and have witnessed a glaring decline in spelling and writing ability over the past 15 years (since I was an undergrad). I don't think it has so much to do with technology aids (such as spellcheck), but rather the rise of e-mail, instant messaging and texting. Relying on these formats perhaps more than any other medium, kids in college and high school these days tend to focus on getting the message out as fast and conveniently as possible. Unfortunately, these habits tend to translate into poor writing in a formal setting, such as college papers. I served as a teaching assistant at UCLA during the 2006-07 academic year and I was....well, astonished by the poor level of writing in term papers and exam essays. Of course, UCLA is not Harvard or anything like that, but still there were way too many careless mistakes for students at the college level. There were plenty of good ideas (I'm not implying that kids are less intelligent today, by any means); its just that they were not communicated well.

In the end, writing is not easy. It takes time and effort.

I would actually place more of the blame on text messaging and email. Eveyone's thoughts are designed to be lightning fast sometimes not even sentences or full words at all. Creativity is lost. Beauty in prose is never discovered.

Dissenting opinion: How can you blame a 'tool' most people don't even use?
I blame a lot of things, mostly the rap industry, and the parents/ teachers.
Plain & simple, people just don't give a f*ck enough to LEARN proper spelling, grammer, and punctuation!

    That would be grammAr Obi!;)

And while I agree with you on most of your statement, I disagree with blaming rappers for the decline of the proper use of english.

The fault clearly lies with parents, teachers & the kids themselves.

Technology is a wonderful thing, but it really should be banned in the classroom until college. Hopefully by then the kids should know how to put together a sentence.

It was called phonics, it was something good which became something bad in the eyes of the system. You learned how to spell based on sound groups and then learned the exceptions to the sound group rules, you then took spelling as well as word definetion tests on a weekly basis.

It was in a time long ago.

Did someone let the Phonics Monkey out of his cage?
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

You think spell check has screwed with the youth. Let me tell you about a time I went to The Varsity down in Atlanta. This little OLD lady who must have worked there since they opened took my order. It was a long but quick order, you have to do that or they get pizzed. I called out my last order of onion rings and she hit the total button. She actually yelled out the total, including tax, before the register could display the total. She was good. I asked her secret? Did the machine show the total her side first? No way! She said that after working there for so many years she could total the amount as she rang up the items and add tax in her head. I was impressed to say the least. BTW...she only has a 4th grade education.
I go to Kroger and get rung up by some kid who has to just stand there and scan my items AND has a machine that tells them how much change to give me and they STILL screw that up.....if I add a little change in the mix....LOL

There are plenty of extremely important uses of technology to learn before getting to college. Just imagine how screwed a person would be if they went to college and didn't know how to use a calculator or type on a keyboard.

Phantom, I learned to type on a typewriter not a keyboard, & we weren't allowed caculators in high school.

But the point is, I had no trouble learning them since I already had learned reading, writing & arithmetic the old fashioned way!

I've already listed the reasons I see behind the decline in spelling and writing (see post #4). But I wanted to add one other factor that might come into play: a decline in reading. Of course, this issue is debatable. Some would argue that kids coming of age these days have simply switched mediums, from novels/serious non-fiction to web sites on the internet. Fair enough. However, one can make a serious argument that the internet is fraught with many more distractions (banners, ads, links) than an issue-driven periodical, novel or work of non-fiction. It seems that the internet is a key to information but not a path to knowledge in the same way that print reading and writing can be. In addition, printed publications tend to be more heavily vetted than online sources. At least in my case, I tend to glance over words and gather information when reading a screen. When I'm reading a book, though, I'm much more inclined to look up a word with which I'm not familiar, remember its meaning and how to spell it, and in turn use it at some point in the future.

And my point is we already have a problem with underprepared college students. The last thing we should be doing is depriving ALL of them of more chances for learning. There are many technology driven or related concepts that should be taught before college. Basic computer/calculator skills, typing... etc.

Removing all technology before college is cutting off your nose to spite your face. It would also widen the gap faced by socio-economically disadvantaged students.

The flaws are in the process of building a good foundation for some students yes, but refusing to let ALL students build upon their foundation is absolutely not the answer. A major problem with this country is too much pandering to the lowest common denominator. You don't fix a flaw in a few students by dragging everyone else down to that same level.
