tiquette of hanging up telemarketing calls

It seems that I've been getting more and more telemarketing (churches, penny stock brokers, etc.) calls, even though I have register my numbers with donotcall register, and even though I hung up or ignored the calls, they are a bunch of persistent buggers. Telling them to remove my name seem to get me nowhere. Here are tips that I found on the net. However, does anyone have a "sure-thing" method of get rid of them?
The Good Etiquette Guide to Hanging Up Politely Ending a phone call is easy
. . . it's all in the wrist.

When you say good-bye, don't wait for a responding good-bye from the caller; the persistent salesperson won't take good-bye for an end to the conversation and will keep talking. Take the receiver away from your ear and hang it up, even if the caller keeps talking.

When the caller takes a breath, interrupt and say, "We do not do business over the telephone. Please take our name off your calling list." Hang up without waiting for a reply, even if the caller keeps talking.

Say to the caller, "We don't need your services. Please take our name off your list. Thank you. Good-bye." Then hang up.

Keep repeating, "No thank you, good-bye" OR "Please take my name off your calling list," without allowing the caller to get in a word. The caller will get bored and hang up on you.

After saying, "please take my name off your call list," say, "I don't want to be rude, but I am now hanging up the phone." Then, do so immediately.

After asking to have your name removed from the calling list and saying good-bye, if the caller keeps talking offer one of the following excuses:

"My dog is teething on my dining table. I must hang up."
"My cat is up a tree. I need to hang up to call the Fire Department."

"A spaceship is landing on my street, I must hang up and watch."

"My sink is running over. I must hang up."

OR invent one with which you feel comfortable. Just be sure not to give personal information. For example:

DON'T SAY: "I can't talk because I'm packing to leave for vacation tomorrow."

DON'T SAY: "My spouse just died, I can't talk now."

DON'T SAY: "I'm on my way out to work, I won't be back until this evening."
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

Caller ID. Don't answer the number unless you know it. If its important they'll leave a message.

Picking up just alerts them they've got a live number and will probably just sell your info to a dozen more spammers.

I like to rack a really big order with them and then suddenly change my mind.

Not really, just hang up reasonably politely.

Telemarketers diserve all of the wrath of the people they call. If they don't like it they should fine a line of work that doesn't involve annoying and harassing people with their scams.

Of course, no lan line at my home so I only deal with these people at my office, which is 100x worse than the home telemarketers.

"Oh, he's not in, do you happen to have his cell phone number handy?"

    They got some real balls.

This is the easiest thing in the world to do:

    "I'm sorry I'm not interested"

and I hang up the phone before they can get another word out.

All the telemarketing calls I used to get went down to 0 once I put myself on the Do Not Call list.

For those that slip through, I have Verizon Iobi & that gives me the ability to block phone numbers. I use it quite liberally!

That you tube one was funny!
But what I was taught was to tell the telemarketer that you need to switch phones and then set the phone down on the counter or desk and go back to work. Pick up the phone only after you hear the Operator or that annoying beeping sound after they have hung up.
    Thanks, Jeff...

Put your number in the do not call registry, and never answer the phone if you don't know the number. People will leave a message.

I tell them not interested and that they have a nice day/evening. One more word out of their mouth that isnt part of telling me goodbye ...I just hang up as they are still talking.

Its actually rude of THEM to try and keep talking to ME after I say not interested and tell them goodbye. Same with door to door.

I ask them what they're wearing.

If they won't answer, then it's obvious they're not concerned about me.

    ....and my needs.

I pick up. While they're fumbling with my name, I ask what are you selling?
Then I say no thanks and hang up. Short and to the point.

And sadly enough, some will call and call and call. There's a
"established business relationship" clause on the do not call rule.
Charities, even those fake ones, can and will call without end.
So can the phone company, etc. And Countrywide morgage can
    kiss my behind.

It's really simple for me. My land line is only there for an internet connection. All of my friends and family have my cell number, so when the home phone rings, I just don't answer it.

Depends, if I am feeling frisky I play a bit, ask them there name, the last four of their social, DL number, home address zip code, mothers maiden name, what high school they graduated from, sometimes I get them to hang up.

I have just set the phone down on the table, you can still hear them rambling so its a bit of a distraction but I once had a fellow go on for nearly five minutes before they realized no one was actually listening.

Beyond that its a simple no thanks and click, however, once I put the do not call thing in place they did reduce alot. Now its pretty much the folks I do business with like CC companies and agencies expempt from the DNC law.

Usually I just say I'm not interested and hang up, but if one is persistent I ask what color underwear they have on. They hang up.
