Is there a database of all the CD's that have been remastered? Any sort of resource?

How often is it that these remastered CDs sound like they weren't mastered at all? Anyone else feel this way? Leze Zeppelin? Jimi Hendrix? ALl these re re releases that sound like crap.

It's a mixed bag for me. Some of the remasters sound great compared to the original. "Why did they bother?" is my first question for some others. It seems to be a crap shoot.

Yes, a database would be right up my alley. If there is one, collectively we could mark which ones were good and which one's you should just save your money on.

It's a crap shoot for sure. I hate the inconsistencies of recorded music. I have bought very few "new" cd's in the past few years because I work hard for my money and many times I am disappointed in the recording quality, so I buy used or am very careful about what I buy.

To me most remastered material ends up sounding the same or worese then the original. How can you take somthing and make more out of nothing?

For what it's worth, I've bought remasters of Jackson Browne, Elton John, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac (yes, I'm old) and they've ALL been better than the originals.

    Am I just lucky?

If you start with the masters you can do wonders.....assuming the masters are good to begin with.

when you say remastered cds, do you mean lps (or even tapes) turned to cds? if that's the case, I couldn't really complain too much about them, I'm just glad I could get earlier records in a media format I could use now.
    imho

One of the possible problems with remasters is if they take material which was originally put to disc with very little processing (a good thing) and today run it through tons of processors and mess it up (a bad thing). I've had some that were much better than the originals. It all depends on the person who does the remaster (is he better than the person who did it the first time) and the equipment used. Its art.

Not sure about a database but, I recently purchased a remix of Fragile by Yes from Elusive Disc. Wow, what a difference compared to the old copy. The old copy sounded like it was taken from 8 track (yes, I had many). While the remastered discs are quite pricey from ED, I think the clarity and the decompression are something to pay for. It was amazing what the decompressed music sounded like. As a friend of mine said, "you get all the glory and warts" of music remastered in this manner. An uncompressed cd will definately give your system a work out!!
