Off the wall...or on it

I have a friend who insists if I bring my SDA 2As away from the back wall I will gain a greater sense of depth in the soundstage, making it more 3-dimensional. The manual is very specific about keeping them close to the back wall. But can anyone explain why? Also, have you experimented with wall distance and have advice to offer? I have mine about 5 inches off the back wall and they have great stereo enhancement, sounding well to the right and left of the speakers, sometimes the sound seems it is beside me, sometimes like it is floating above the back wall...but not going "back in space" behind the speakers, which is the 3D sound I am speaking of. Anybody?

I think he is write about taking the away from the wall but I could be wrong. It sounds like it would make sense to allow audio to reverberate off the wall.

SDAs are not your average speaker . . . they seem to be best placed close to the wall unless your bass is excessive.

Move them around a bit and decide what you like.

I gave up on listening to other peoples advice on how to listen to my equipment, and do what I think sounds best.
My equipment sig felt inadequate and deleted itself.

Mine are 8-10" off the wall. They don't sound right any further. Do not toe them in. I sight across one speaker to the other to make sure they are straight.

Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
    Thanks

That is true in many cases, but the SDA's need to be set up a specific way to get the most out of them. There are certain guidelines to follow or they won't reach their full potential.

    Close to the wall
    No toe in
Minimum 5 feet apart; try to keep the equilateral triangle in play.
Atleast 3 feet distance on either side between the side walls.
None of this means much unless the cable is in place.
