Aurora man sentenced to 30 months for wire, mail fraud

An Aurora man, convicted in May of nine counts of wire and mail fraud involving a scheme to sell electronics over the Internet without providing the items, was sentenced Tuesday to 30 months in prison and ordered to pay $47,540 to seven people.
Assistant State's Atty. Ken Tatarelis told Judge Robert Anderson that Charles Threat, 48, of the 2700 block of Village Green Drive, used an Internet electronics trading site in 2005 and 2006 to contact "victims across the country, from East Coast to West Coast. He chose his victims assuming they would never travel here to testify against him, but seven of them did."
Tatarelis said that Threat never had any items for sale, just photographs of CD players and different audio equipment he said would be delivered after payments were made.
Threat contended during the trial that the dealers were responsible for the problems. He was critical of the jury's verdict Tuesday and asked Anderson to vacate the verdict.
"You have had a pattern of fooling people in life, and this was a well thought out scheme," Anderson said.
Anderson said state law prohibited him from making Threat pay the $2,897 in travel costs that the seven people who testified in his trial incurred, but ordered the full $47,540 in restitution for equipment paid for, but never received.

"I got into the music business thinking it was really radical, that it wasn't really a business at all, that it was a lot of people being artistic and creative. Not true, and it made me very depressed."
