Soy vs Whey Protein

I'm looking to start a new diet that's going to include some protein powder as part of nutrition shakes and such. I'm gonna give the Body for Life/Eating for Life system a try for a couple months and see how it works out for me.

I know there are a billion different systems out there and everyone has their favorite, so I'm not starting this as a 'which system is better' thread...

That being said, I have a couple of questions:

1 - Is there any functional difference or advantage one has over the other, soy or whey protein that is?

2 - Does one taste better than the other, or do they both taste like **** and I'm just going to have to deal with it?

It looks like I'll need Vanilla and Chocolate powders for some of my shakes and such. Should I be able to just find that stuff at the local grocer, or online somewhere?

Thanks

I just a few scoops of chocolate ice cream to the shakes and they are quite tasty ;)

Think I would go wth the soy...whey just sounds bad tasting..never have tried whey but have done the soy thing....wife into the soy milk etc.....not a fan of soy milk at all......good luck whichever route you take......

There is a difference, one is the byproducts your body makes when it burns them for energy and the other is how easy your body assimilates them.

Don't get caught up in the hype of too much protein, the main reason you want to keep protien levels up when loosing weight is the nitrogen balance in your system, if you keep a certain level your body less likely to canabalise muscle tissue for energy. The negative is when your body burns protien for energy it creates amonia, very bad for your system. If you do plan on a high protein diet you really need a lot of antioxidents, see how complicated it gets? but it doesen't have to be.

4 to 1 that should be your ratio, so if you have a 2,200 calorie a day diet, 1600 calories from carbs and 400 calories from protien and 200 from fat and whatever else.

Just be sure to eat the right carbs... http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/what-should-you-eat/carbohydrates/ that will give you an idea.

If you really want to increase the protien, whey is the way to go, pick up some eas whey protein in vanilla and make smoothies, here is a good recipe..

cup of vanilla soy yogurt, a little vanilla soy milk, blueberries and whatever fruit you like, almonds, a little ground flax, scoop of whey protein, whip it up in a blender, pour it in a glass and top with some kashi granola.

That is a super tastey breakfast.

If you don't plan to lift weights, casein most likely would be your best bet. If lifting, combination of whey and casein. Forget about soy.

Urban legend. Kind of. Even if soy lowers testo levels on a male, it's not enough for gyno.

I have liked whey because it is widely available, a good protein, and can be absorbed quickly. However, if you are lactose intolerant, it may not be the best choice. The profile of soy is also fine, I just didn't think it necessary. I have really like casein protein because of it's slow absorption and high quality (it's egg protein). Unless you are looking for a specific protein for a specific reason, I prefer a mixed protein supplement for general use. It has the best attributes of all the different types, plus usually tastes fine. Just make sure that you look at the nutrition and serving info for the supplement. Try to get one with less fat and around 20g or more of protein per scoop.

    Good choice.

Bill Phillips openly promotes his products in the Body for Life program but you can substitute supplements from other companies with the same results. But, like he says, you have to do SOMETHING !

If you follow his program, HONESTLY follow his program, you'll see results, you'll feel results, and quickly.

Over-simplified, but you still can have your "off days". Wanna eat some of that good ol' greasy pizza like you used to. Go ahead, on the weekends. Guaranteed, though, you'll rather quickly choose not to, without suffering hunger pangs and such.

Good luck. I have to go get some more smokes. :o

I've always used whey - it's cheaper and more available, and soy tends to upset my stomach a bit.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Stick with whey. It's more easily absorbed and digested by the body. Bodybuilding.com is an excellent source for nutritional supplements. I started working out hard again for the past couple months now that law school is done. I gained 15 pounds of muscle.

    What are your health goals?

Absorption time is the reason you don't want to use it for all purposes. Even if you lift hard, whey is an after workout supplement. The rest of the time take casein, especially before bedtime.

Oh, and take a good look at nutrition label. Some shakes taste good, some bad. The difference? The good tasting ones usually are loaded with fat and sugar as well as protein (Muscle Milk f.e.). You don't want those, go with high protein with minimal carbs and fat. A good one is EAS 100% Whey Protein I found at Sam's Club, and it was very cheap and tastes good (both vanilla and chocolate).

Isn't Casein a type of whey protein? Casein is just sustained over a longer time period, Isolate is the best in the morning and after workout. There are many proteins with a combination of both, I like those the best. One that comes to mind is; BSN Syntha 6, and it tasted pretty good too.

Nevermind Sami, I though it was... There a LOT of good articles over at www.bodybuilding.com

    http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/totalprotein.htm

That page has more info on protein than you'll ever need to know.

Both whey and casein are milk proteins. Milk is 80% casein and 20% whey.

+1 That stuff is pretty good for the price, my favorite is the chocolate. They are both excellent for making shakes with a blender, mix a bananna and some PB in there, yum!

One of my favorite protein concoctions....

    - 1 scoop of protein powder
    - 6-8 oz Skim Milk
    - 2 tablespoons of PB
    - Half or whole bananna
    - Fill the rest of blender jar with ice and add maybe add a little water.(dependant on what consistancy you want the shake)

    BLEND!
