Caps and resistors.

I put together the parts I needed for the Mon5Jr+ and it would cost my $13 total for them, caps and resistors. For as cheap as that it, it might just be worth a try to replace the old components. I don't think the SQ would largely improve, but it might just because they are new components and well made.

I was considering using Dayton Audio caps and resistors for a Mon 5Jr+ redo. Anyone have experience with these?
I'd be very curious to hear your impressions if you go ahead with this idea. I've got a pair of 5Jr+ in my bedroom setup and would be potentially interested in doing an economical crossover refresh.
Note that I'm allowing you to be the trailblazer.

No, it's cool. I'll try to check the components tonight and get to ordering (no promises). Since there are so few parts, it should be quiet easy and take much less time then my SDAs.

Those are a little out of the price point I was looking at for this project.I put together the parts I needed for the Mon5Jr+ and it would cost my $13 total for them, caps and resistors.

I checked out the x-overs in my Mon5Jrs last night and the board is screwed face down to the large inductor with the components actually housed inside it. I would only be replacing one cap and one resistor, but that is still almost no room to work with.
I guess I have three options: redo it and hope the new, larger components fit, redo it and don't reattach the board to the inductor, or try to flip the board over when I replace the components. -
Well I picked my components and I'll make it all fit, come hell or high water.
For the 1 Ohm resistor I will be using the Mills 12w resistor. I haven't heard anyone not like Mills components and I have had success with them in the past, plus they are smaller than there Dayton counter-part.
For the cap, I'm going to try the Jantzen 12uF 400V Crosscap over the Dayton, also because of the smaller size. Both components are a little more expensive, but are both still "budget" components when rebuilding x-overs ($20 total including shipping for PE). -
Sorry H9 I thought I had read this thread before. OK this is what I go from doing a three way shootout between the Solen's, Jantzens, and Daytons. The highly recommend Solen's were too edgy, and SS wasn't there. The Jantzens were better. The Dayton's were the best out of the three. I did this shootout a long time ago. All caps had good burn in time. Even with much more time on the clock the Solen's were still just not accurate, and fatigue would set in pretty quick. After I get my feet back on the ground I want to add sonicaps to the list, but for budget caps the Daytons were definitely the best. Thats my view on budget caps. The Dayton resistors did not seem to change things either. Not as pretty, but I would use them again.

If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.

From my experience Ben, Sonicaps are fantastic and I used them in my RDO 4.1TL build. But, I didn't want to spend that much on my little RDO Mon5Jrs, and I also don't know if I could justify spending that amount on components again. The Daytons were real tempting because of the good reviews and great price, but just too big for this application. However, Dayton will be the next set of components I use.

Dayton's are actually no bigger than the others. If I remember correctly the Dayton's were a little longer, but skinnier. I think the Jantzen's were the same size as the Dayton's. If I were to do it all over again I would have gone Sonicaps on my RTA15RDO's.

That was my thinking, My RDO4.1TLs are my premium/main 2 channel speakers that I will be keeping for a long time, so I thought it was worth it to go the distance on them.

I remember your shoot out and I'm still going with Clarity Caps. I want to try something different that is inexpensive and Madisound is practically local"Appreciation of audio is a completely subjective human experience. Measurements can provide a measure of insight, but are no substitute for human judgment. Why are we looking to reduce a subjective experience to objective criteria anyway? The subtleties of music and audio reproduction are for those who appreciate it. Cool. I am just shooting from the hip here, but I think you have used Solen's. I shall continue to watch this thread.

You are correct I used Solens in my 5Bs. I'm going to replace the high pass with a Clarity Cap."Appreciation of audio is a completely subjective human experience. Help me out a little.
The SDA-1C's use 2.7 and 7.5 ohm resistors stock.
What would change in terms of sound quality (dumb it down for me some please) if I used a 2.5 and 7 ohm Mills resistor? -
They're both within 10%, so it shouldn't make a big difference.
Sonic Craft should have the exact values you need."He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you." Friedrich Nietzsche -
Do resistors need some burn in time like capacitors?
-
Not saying it's not possible with others, but I've only noticed a subtle difference with Duelund resistors."He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you." Friedrich Nietzsche

Solen and WIMA is very good value for money but if quality matter I think M-cap is the way to go:)
