Static from new amp normal?

Hello, I got an Adcom GFA-5500 for use with my RTI a9's. I turn the amp off when not in use. Is it normal for there to be static seemingly only coming through the left speaker for about the first 5 minutes it's on? The sound comes through as well but there is also a bit of static but it is noticeable, however only through the left speaker. I bought the amp used but was assured it was in working order. It does seem that after the amp "warms up" or after 5 minutes or so there is no more static until I turn it off, it cools down and I use it next time then the static is back. Any help or suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks!

PS, I tried to edit the title to not say new amp, since it is used but it wouldn't let me.

Any idea on what the cause of this could be?

Could be any number of things. The only way to know for sure is to have it bench tested. One thing you might do is pop the top (unpluged) and look around for cold solder joints.

Ha, yeah that's the idea in the name. I live in a somewhat small city. Can any electronics repair place test it? The nearest service center listed on their website is about 4 hours away.

How do you know it's the amp and not the pre amp or source or cable. In situations like these always to to eliminate other components by isolating them as much as possible.

The very first thing I would do is swap the (L) channel speaker with the (R) channel speaker to rule out speakers and speaker cable. Next I'd check all my interconnects using the same procedure. I'd also try and use an alternate wall plug and see if that helps.

Of course if everything is the same except for the amp and it worked fine right before you added the Adcom then maybe it is the amp. I've had a few cheaper cables go bad on me.

Sorry, but if I had just bought a NEW amp and it had issues, I'd return it or exchange it.
