I've really been digging some random classical pieces online with a heavy cello concentration. I also enjoyed a few cuts off of some guy called Takenobu's album, which is an odd/folksy type album but has some good instrumental cuts.

So basically I was hoping to get some more good recommendations for players, albums, etc with a good concentration on cellos.

Odd request, but I figured if anyone would have good suggestions it would be you guys.

I really enjoy the sound of the cello, too. I liked when Nirvana had the celloist on "Unplugged". Foo Fighters use the same chick(I believe) in their "Skin and Bones" concert I saw on HDNET, recently.

Check out Apocalyptica... While most of their stuff is heavy metal via cello (which can be quite interesting and sometimes beautiful), they also do some more traditional classical music.

I could get you some samples if you like. Here's some YouTube vids to get you started-

"Nothing Else Matters" Metallica Cover - http://youtube.com/watch?v=rbTozgoj9OQ

"The Unforgiven" Metallica Cover - http://youtube.com/watch?v=xqUXDdJ3C-c

    "Somewhere Around Nothing" - http://youtube.com/watch?v=eM4qMuhEgeA&feature=related

Stick with me through these vids, and you might just become a fan. I got my dad to like them, and he's a cellist :)

Put this one on and just listen. They don't have a music video for it, but it has to be one of my favorite songs to crank on the SDA's - http://youtube.com/watch?v=eM4qMuhEgeA&feature=related

Work has finally taken away our youtube access, so I'll have to wait till I get home to check those out.

I've got a couple of classical covers of modern music, like Radiohead, Tool and Floyd, but they're a bit odd still. I love classical (grew up playing the piano), and love those bands, but the mix is tough for me for some reason. I'll give these guys a good listen though; your description sounds intriguing.

    I'll second Apocolyptica.

Modest Mouse is a good modern band that makes use of string instruments and horns. They're not the focus, but the tunes wouldn't be the same without them.

    Ditto on Modest Mouse.

I also love the sound of the cello. One of my favorite cello cd's right now is Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Cello moods" :http://www.amazon.com/Cello-Moods/dp/B00000IX78
    Check it out.

I also like the sound of cello a lot. Yo-Yo Ma is probably one of the best players IMO. My favorite CD is a Musical Heritage Society with YYM in the cello and Emanuel Ax on piano, "Brahms Cello Sonatas".

I found this on Amazon; same cover, different label. You can listen to samples and there are a few used for sale.

I had the honor of seeing Yo-Yo Ma perform at my college. Absolutely stunning.

JF, I have quite a few discs in my collection which feature the cello, but the one that most immediately comes to mind when someone asks for a suggestion is this one . It includes the Dvorak Cello Concerto, which many consider to be the finest cello concerto, plus the haunting Schelomo and also Kol Nidrei, all featuring classic performances by cellist Pierre Fournier. As David Hurwitz comments in his editorial review for Amazon, one of the peculiarities of the classical music business is that there's no relationship between price and performance quality, and the fact that this disc is available for around $5-$7 from various sources is certainly a good example of that.

Then, for a bit more of a shotgun approach in a large collection of pleasant cello selections, this can be recommended.

Check out anything by Janos Starker; particularly the Bach Cello Suites...
