I had a 5400, 545, and they are way under rated. I should have kept mine too.
Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
    Thanks
    Ben

These amps are great lots of head room. I also have a 555II and
while it was getting repaired (fuse) i tried the 5400 and 5300
with my GTP-500II and RTi10s and sounded just as good i hate
to sell them but need some $ for other projects.

IMO, the 545 is the best kept secret in the whole Adcom line :D

IMHO, 545II is the best kept secret. Definitely worth the improvements. 5400 is just the build-up on 545II... although not sure if I'd pick 5400 over 545II.

The 545II is NOT direct coupled it is capacitor coupled and, IMO, has a bit more coloration as well as the caps being at the end of their useful life by now. As well as Adcom adding a Darlington output stage, which is not really necessary.

The 5400 is a completely different animal than either of the 545's. Not even the same design as it uses Mosfet's at the output stage (545 used Bi-polar) and has a more complicated HEXFet input stage.

The charm of the 5xx series are it's minimal gains stages and it's simplicity. The later Adcoms still sound very good, but they are unnecessarily complicated and, IMO, don't sound quite as open and detailed as the earlier Bi-Polar Adcoms.
