Is my receiver right for the Monitor 60's?

FYI I am pretty to the world of caring about stereo's, so please bare with me.

I currently killed my receiver from a Kenwood receiver that came from a stereo in a box sort of deal. I had no other receiver so I decided to buy a Pioneer VSX-918V-K which was on sale for $200 off. Receiver sounds great for it's price; however these speakers I have from the old kenwood system are just OK. My plan is to take my old to fronts (for now) and use them as surround speakers, then purchase new fronts and eventually another center. Also I will be keeping my 200w watt sub that I have. My price range is about $400-$500 which is about what I paid for the receiver.

There is not any local stereo shops where I live and I pretty much have to go by suggestion, reviews and price range to decide what I need and have them shipped.

Finally how do you guys think the Monitor 60's would sound with my receiver. I know it's not the best but it was at the time in my price range. Would they do well for movies, rock and rap. Is my amp suited to these speakers or would they not perform to their potential?

Any feedback would be appreciated.

First welcome to club Polk. Second separate amplification is always better with Polk's, but the monitor series is fairly easy to drive. If you hear distortion at all back off a bit. Set your bass, and treble levels to 0db, and you should be just fine. Stick around this is a good place to be. For now I also recommend going to WalMart, and in the automotive section pick up some 14ga speaker wire. The stuff in the automotive section is much better than the stuff in the home audio department;)

Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
    Thanks

your Reciever will handle monitor 60's .. like ben said Polks and many speakers sound better with seperate amp. which means you will have to upgrade your reciever down the road with something that has pre-outs.

monitor 60's are nice speakers for the price have you tryed looking at the Tsi 300,400, or 500 yet ? they are newer same price range and a step up from the monitor line.

if you are contend with a pioneer recievers and dont have a problem buying used you may want to set up to buy VSX 72txv it is off their elite line Older reciever (came out i think 2002) has hdmi its has all that thx crap, pre outs, its 7.1,everything to make you happy and it also looks nice. you can get something like that for around at the max 400.

    welcome to polk ;)

also i found this i dont know how you feel about shopping from ebay

    http://cgi.ebay.com/PIONEER-ELITE-VSX-81TXV-7-1-CHANNEL-HOME-RECEIVER-THX_W0QQitemZ350080255459QQihZ022QQcategoryZ14981QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

things i like about pioneer recievers is you can set it up through your t.v with hdmi only if your t.v can do 480i which most do makes it really easy to tune stuff.

First off I am a Ebay-aholic, I just don't like buying stuff like speakers from there due to a lot of them not being authorized dealers and then having issues with warranty's down the road. I had been looking at www.crutchfield.com and the prices seemed alright. Plus I only see Rti's and Lsi's on crutchfield. Any other recommended sites for good deals.

2nd I just bought the receiver last week actually from a best buy in Montreal, so I don't think I would be upgrading to something with preouts for a while (my wedding is in 5 weeks and not a lot of cash floating around). I could probably exschange it but that would be a pain.

I know a better receiver would help with these speakers and that is the answer I expected before writing the initial post, but my main concern for now is simply would these speakers perform well enough with this receiver or am I just wasting my cash if I buy them?

FYI, Bought all new wire, soldered new plugs and my speakers will be here on Tuesday. Ended up finding them from an authorized dealer on Ebay for $363 for the pair shipped including all duties, taxes etc... Not bad.

I still do have a question though I was considering purchasing a new center and the same guy has a CSi3 center for sale at a good price. Would I be better going with this ported center or sticking with cs1 monitor series center speaker since it made to compliment the monitor series? the CSi3 is only $5 more.
