It's when you get yourself a pair of Carver Silver 7t amps for your Carver Amazings and you hook them up and everything is hunky dory! Then, you pop a friggin' woofer!
SONOFA...!!!!
Yeah, picked up Shizelbs Silver 7t's he unloaded and they came the other day. So I strapped them up to the rig and they were singin' along just fine! Then I hear this godawful pop and squeak from the right speaker. I killed the power immediately. I looked at everything, it all seemed ok, thought it was a bad ground. So I turned it back on with the volume all the way down and slowly creeped it back up and then I heard it. The unmistakable sound of what seems like a cone separated from former or other suspension component.
What a drag! I finally get some decent amplification for my tunes and they betray me like this! So I gotta look at the right speaker. Not today though, maybe this weekend. See what's up. I might be in the market for a 12" woofer for a Carver Amazing soon so keep yer eyes open!

You know, you can buy new woofers for the amazings. I forget the price but I'm thinking they were $50 each?

Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
Thanks

Your thread should be titled "This SUCKS" instead of "This Stinks"
Good luck on your quest to find a replacement woof. -

Yeah, I know it sucks but I didn't want to put a naughty word on the thread title.
One good thing to know is that the amps survived shipping from across the country!Expert Moron Extraordinaire

New replacement woofers are available from Orevox for $38 each. You would need to replace all four, or even better all eight so they all have the same response characteristics. If you don't want to go to that extent, you would be better off replacing the bad one with a used woofer from Russ. You can probably continue to use the speaker by cutting the wires between the speaker terminals and the cone and inserting a 16 ohm resistor, but I'd check with some of the folks on the forum with much more electronics knowledge that I before going that route.

OK, number one, you can't simply just cut out a woofer. The way they are wired, if one goes out, they all go out.
Number two, if looks like I fixed it. The woofers are "flat cone" woofers. They have a paper pulp cone attached to the back which is then attached to the voice coil former to connect the flat diaphragm with the motor structure. That cone separated from the back of the piston. So I took some surround glue and stuck it back on. It seems to have worked so we'll see after I give them a workout later when the glue dries completely.
Thanks for the offers of help with a replacement driver. I'm not out of the woods yet so I might be taking someone up on their offer in the near future. But for now, I think the crisis has been averted.Expert Moron Extraordinaire

John,
You've got the Original version, right? 2 30" ribbons, per side? The ones that Abernathy has are the Plat/Silver drivers.....
N/M....finally read all the way down. Rock on, man. I had that setup for awhile and LOVED it.

Yeah, it's just a woofer. The ribbons are fine. IIRC, the woofers in the originals are similar to the platinums. The only possibility that might cause issue that I'm not sure about is the impedance rating of the woofers of the originals vs. the platinums. Otherwise I think they can be swapped out.
But, like I said, I think I'm cool for now.Expert Moron Extraordinaire
