LSi w/ picture-frame TOPs?

I know the difference between the "new" and "old" was a picture frame front and back, but what about LSi's with the picture frame TOPs? Just look at the LSi7 in this review. The cherry wood color suggests the "old" LSi, but the top is different.
Are they an early pre-production variant?

That would be my vote. I wish they had a shot with the grills on....Mains.............Polk LSi15 (Cherry)
Center............Polk LSiC (Crossover upgraded)
Surrounds.......Polk LSi7 (Gloss Black - wood sides removed and crossovers upgraded)
Subwoofers.....SVS 25-31 CS+ and PC+ (both 20hz tune)
Pre\Pro...........NAD T163 (Modded with LM4562 opamps)
Amplifier.........Cinepro 3k6 (6-channel, 500wpc@4ohms) -
Well, FWIW, this is also how LSi9s were introduced, too, during the Stereophile’s Home Entertainment 2001 show (also an interesting see through model of LSi7) and in the Winter 2001 issue of the The Speaker Specialist - issue #7 - notice a shiny flat front and a raised top of the LSi9 featured on the cover.

EDIT: Michael, on pages 8-9 of the Specialist there are shots with and w/o the grills.
