Hi-Fi Buys Nationals

Had a pretty big show over the weekend. Hi-Fi Buys in Nashville sponsored a big show with $500 going to the highest SQ score, $300 to the 2nd highest and $200 to the 3rd highest. Last year this show brought out all the big dawgs and this year was no exception.
My teammate Kirk Proffit (yeah Im name dropping) won the $500 with a monster score of 87 and whooped everybody in an '05 Acura TL using stock speaker locations and the stock head unit. All I can say to that is just, wow. And Im just so happy that he's in my class again this year. Yay me.
There were over 20 cars there I think (over 50 counting SPL) and I wound up 5th overall and just like last year I came in 2nd in my class...right behind Kirk again...just like at world finals. Ive never been anybody's **** before. Feels weird.
The top 10 results - name, score and gear used:
1. Kirk Proffitt - 87.3 (Zapco, Audio Technology)
2. Dominick Iraggi - 86 (Digital Designs, Scan)
3. Bret Harbison - 82.5 (Scanspeak)
4. Andy Jones - 82 (Genesis)
5. Aaron Thomas - 81.5 (Polk)
6. David Timmerman - 80.3 (Dynaudio)
7. Cory Bradley - 79.5 (Dynaudio)
8. Jonathan Denton - 79.3 (Alpine PDX, Dynaudio)
9. Ricky MConnell - 79.1 (Alpine PDX, Scanspeak)
10. Cory Harrod - 77.3
The old Polks went up against some pretty exotic brands and wound up doing pretty good eh?
Ill post some pics in additional posts.

A shot of SPL guys going thru the lanes.
The trophies.
David Timmerman's install. He won best of show at last years world finals and has a completely custom dash but for some reason nobody got any pics of that.
Kirk and his Acura.
Robert Petty's Acura.
Another buddy and teammate of mine is running these weird subs in the back of his 08 Civic and they hit like a ton of bricks. The install isnt finished yet.
A kindred spirit in the SPL lanes!
A little bracing for an SPL run.
Minde Ramos heads up an all girl SPL team. Team H.B.I.C. Is that not the coolest name ever?! She slams too - hitting in the 150's......and she's pretty smokin' hot!

Actually those arent Alpines. The Alpine is in a box, those are free air. I cant remember what brand those are tho.polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005

That looks like fun Mac. I'm sure you'll get him in the next competition.
How do they score those things anyway? I figured that SPL is obviously raw volume, but what do they score you on for SQL? Do they use an ociliscope or something to check for the perfectness of your sine wave?/////ALPINE INA-W900 HU

MECA uses a 100 point score sheet. Basically its like this:
system noise: 0 to -5
sub bass: 1-10
midbass: 1-10
midrange: 1-10
highs: 1-10
linearity: 1-5
dynamics: 1-10
ambience: 1-5
front stage: 1-10
stage width: 1-6
stage height: 1-6
stage depth: 1-6
center image: 1-6
left image: 1-3
right image: 1-3
They use a test disc (Chesky's Ultimate Demonstration Disc) and judge. They get in, sit down and close their eyes and listen and score you accodingly in each category in .5 point increments. No meters or RTA's; just on what they hear. MECA does have RTA competitions but theyre a seperate category and not part of the SQ judging.
At a big show like this one you have 3 judges and your score is the average of the three. At normal shows you only have 1 judge.polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005
