I don't eat sushi too often, maybe once a month, but I've recently taken a liking to escolar at one of the sushi places I go to. For some odd reason I was googling fish today (don't ask  ) and found disturbing news about escolar. According to wiki it's even banned for consumption in Japan!
The gastrointestinal symptoms, called "keriorrhoea", caused by these wax esters may include oily orange diarrhea, discharge, or leakage from the **** that may smell of mineral oil.

I've never gotten the "orange ****" from it, small doses I guess, but I don't think I'll be ordering it anymore. Consider this a public service announcement! :p

that may smell of mineral oil.

That's odd because mineral oil is colorless, odorless and tasteless.

Escolar is a type of mackerel. Like most mackerel, it wreaks and is very oily. It's a very "fishy" and while it is harvested commercially and recreationally, it is considered by many a junk fish and mostly used for bait or chum because of it's oily properties. But because of all the oil, it doesn't keep. It has to be either eaten the day you catch it or it gets cured. It's big in Asia and India, especially cured.

It's an acquired taste for sure so if you can stomach it, you got a talent IMO. Usually if we snag a mackerel on a fishing trip, it gets thrown back or cut up right then and there and either thrown in the bait bucket or in the chum bucket.

BLAH! Just the thought of it makes me remember the stink! Easily in the top 20 worst stinks of all time.

I get fresh escolar sometimes in a good fish market here in San Diego.

The fish is a nice whitefish with a good soft texture - when cooked.

I grill it with just a bit of oil and seasoning - absolutely no bad reactions from any in my family.

Its a wonderful tasting fish - imo. :p

That's why I generally try to stay away from wax esters.

And that sort of sounds like the forumula for Hai Karate cologne.

Escolar should only be eaten in small (4 oz or less) portions. Very fresh it is wonderful. Too much at one sitting .....Yikes!
