add 2nd sony sa-wm40 sub......help

Hello all,
Right now I have an older single sony sa-wm40 sub which I really like. My room that it is in is about 20x18. I just got a onkyo tx-sr606 receiver and have it connected to a polk rm20 surround set. I was wondering if it would be good idea to add a 2nd sub to my mix. I like bass in whatever i am listening or watching. Would it be good idea to get another same sony sub (probably could find for less than $100 bux) or not. My sub now is pretty good and don't have lots to spend. And how would I hook up 2 to give me the best possible sound. Any help would be great. And where should i place 2 subs of equal caliber. Thanks

I used to have that sub, for what it was and what it cost, it was a pretty good sub. it vcame out of the box a little flabby and boomy, but if you throw some polyfill in the cabinet, it really tightens things up. at least a 1/2 lb of fill if i remember correctly.

another mod would be putting a couple layers of mod podge on the driver not the dustcap or surrounds though)

I mention this because adding a second one, while increasing the bass, might really be boomy without the mods. i would at least do the polyfill mod on both.

dont forget to try both stacking one on top of the other and 2 different lovcations to see which one is better. most like stacking but when I ran 2 different subs, it sounded better in 2 different places.

long stry short, definitly try it, the fact that they are same subs will actually make it a little easier than mixing 2 differnet subs.

You can get an RCA splitter, which is what i'm using, so it splits the LFE signal between two subs.

Personally, i just run both of mine right next to each other, so it helps reduce the cancelling effect you get if you run them farther apart.

The sony has a line in/line out on it as well as speaker inputs. To add the 2nd, can I just run a cable from the receiver out to the line in. Then run a second cable from the 1st sony sub line out to the line in on the 2nd sony sub. Is that ok or is there a better way to hook it up for more performance. Thanks.

dont use that line out, I think the crossover affects what comes out of that line out.

do the y splitter plan, it will work like a cham,

Thanks ohskigod. Kinda new to this. What would be the proper way to use the y-splitter. Does this take any performance out of the first sub if I only used one. Or will they both sound good with no loss of performance either way.

When you use the splitter, you'll have your LFE output off you receiver, it'll go into the female end of the splitter, and split into two male ends that you then connect to each sub.

    No noticable loss of performance.

I concur, no loss of performance at all with the y splitter. hook it to the reciever to split your sub out into 2 outputs, then one sub cable to each sub. voila!!

dont forget to turn your crossovers on the sub all the way to the right (highest setting) since you will be using the crossover in the reciever.

cant stress enough the difference that polyfill will make either....just sayin

Instead of adding a 2nd sony sub, would it better to get 1 svs sub instead. I can get the other sony sub for about 50 bux. which svs sub would be good to add to rm20 setup. and how much do these run.... thanks for the help. any advice.

If you dont mind spending the coin for better quality product, then NSD 10" and NSD 12" Series. http://www.svsound.com/products-sub-box-isd.cfm if you think the sony is good, youre going to be blown away with these.
