O.K., so I'm looking thru Audiogon, and they have the speakers grouped into Monitors, Full Range, and Planars. What Little I could gleam from a Google search, is that Monitors are more neutral, and generally cover a wider freq. range, and that they usually are more acurate reproduction?
I'm just trying to figure out which is gonna give me a more full range sound, and I'm confused.

Nope, you have it backwards. Monitors = bookshelves (on Agon) and Floorstanders = Floorstanders. That said Floorstanders cover a wider frequency range then monitors, as for more neutral, it depends the speaker.

Just click on "Speakers." Then you get to scan through everything.

I'm not crazy about their setup either. Some of the speakers I like are considered monitors, but would be listed under full range due to their size. http://cls.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?spkrfull&1218585039

This hobby sux, and you guys are killin' me:D
I've got Monitor 60's. Are they classified as Monitor's, or just called them?
    They're 2 ways, but they're floorstanders???
And Harbeth makes 'Monitor 40's', but they're 3 ways?

    Who's on 1st????:p

    What's in a name

Don't worry about terms that are poorly defined and/or used more for marketing than anything else.

A "reference monitor" can be any kind of speaker or speaker system, as long as its acoustic properties are well-known and well-understood by the engineer. A good bad example are the Auratone cubes once found ubiquitously in recording studios. They sound terrible... but the sound engineers knew that they were the standard to mix a hit single to be played on AM car radios. The (in)famous Yamaha NS-10 is another bad sounding but well-established studio monitor. Altec 604 duplex (coax) speakers were once nearly ubiquitous monitors in radio stations and also in many studios.

    I can't offer any insight into Audiogon's categories... I don't frequent Audiogon.

Sooooo, Audiogon's classification is NOT an industry standard?

You read correctly. For soundstaging, pin point imaging, to die for vocals, and there uncanny ability to literally disappear in a room...a pair of monitors are truly the "Cats Meow".

This is debatable. The main difference between a monitor and a floorstander is the size and the amount of bass it puts out. Of course there are plenty of exceptions, but a floorstander will typically produce more bass than a monitor.

In terms of soundstaging, imaging, and vocals, a monitor is not necessarily superior by virtue of its design. I used to own a pair of Taylo monitors, and there are a few people on this forum who would agree that these monitors have outstanding soundstaging an imaging capabilities. However, once I replaced them with my current floorstanders, it was no contest -- the soundstage of the floorstanders was much wider, probably due largely to more bass output. For my main rig, there's no way I would consider going back to monitors.

I guess that's why there are options; I would not consider going back to floorstanders ;)

Ha ha. Your track record is worse than mine. You'll have a new pair of floorstanders next week.:p

What are benefits to each? From what I understand(which is very little at this point!)
Monitors are a better reproduction, but Full Range gives certain nuances?

Are there any mid-high end shops near you that you could listen to some gear and see what you like?

Yes & no. There's 2 other than tweeter, but only 1 is open on Sat. and they only carry Def. Tech. and MagnePlanars. I heard the Mag's, they sounded alright, but nothing special to me?
I'm looking for something w/ more bass presence, but without the diconnect I've heard from the Def. Tech. 7006's.(Similar to LSi15's)
I listened to them at Best Buy, and the sub's were facing back in towards the wall.
I thought those drivers were to be facing out, not in?

The other place is open M-F only, but they carry Paradigm's. And I DO want to hear those.

Here's something funny. My wife has green lighted changing around the furniture in the den. I think it would be beneficial sonically (going from length-wide to width-wise in a 13' x 20 room). However, the room change calls for bookshelf speakers.

Any local Polkies in the market for a nice pair of floorstanders? Aaarrghh! I hate this hobby.:o

    :):):) Funny, isn't it?

I was actually looking at your comment on my track record above, and realized that since I got these monitors I'm on my way to set a record. 7 months and counting!!!

Just for reference, in the last 2-3 years I've had:

    Thiel 3.6's: 4 months
    Tyler Linbrook system: 6 months
    3.1TL's: 4 months
Carver AL-III's: 4 months (Alternating with the 3.1TL's)
    1.2TL's: 11 months
    SRS's: 2 months
    1B's: 3 months

    2007 was definitely a roller coaster :eek::eek:
