Modest Sized Center Speaker

I installed a Polk RM6005 5.1 speaker system in my living room/entertainment center a couple of years ago. Given the constraints of making the room function with both of these functions, it has worked really quite well with the exception being the system's (i.e. the center speaker's) inability to deliver really crisp dialog. Because we mainly use the system to watch DVD's, the ability to deliver crisp dialog is just critical for us. I have looked at other modestly sized units (sized, not necessarily priced) and am trying to find out whether something like the Polk RM8C would fit the bill. Because of the constraints of the room, a center speaker over 20 inches wide just won't work. Is there a significant improvement with either the CS1 or CSR or CSi25? When I make the change, I really want to do something that will significantly improve the performance. Yes, I do know that I will have to replace the other speakers as well, but I'm trying to work backward from the center speaker.

I would suggest a cs2, csi3 or csi5....they are the top of the line for now "budget" speakers....you may want to place it on the floor facing up. Make sure with the one you have now that there is nothing blocking it. Like if you have it behind the tv on the stand. Check to see if your reciever let you adjust the treble on the center. sometimes if you do that voices can be a bit more clear.

And welcome to club polk...hey you may find yourself buying floor towers if your worried. You won't just upgrade the center...trust me.

None of those will work...too wide. The CS1 is 18" and the TSi10 is 20...slightly different crossover specs, but similar in performance. These centers will add clarity and weight to dialog...much more than you're used to. Whether they would overpower your satelites is another issue...probably not with calibration, but they will sound richer and deeper.

    Combo rig:

Onkyo NR1007 pre-pro, Carver TFM 45(fronts), Carver TFM 35 (surrounds)
    SDA 1C, CS400i, SDA 2B
    PB13Ultra RO
    BW Silvers
    Oppo BDP-83SE
