Oh NO!
It seems i waited just too long to place my order for two R50's from frys.
they are listed as out of stock! I wonder if they are going to get anymore?

what are my alternatives? I would like tower speakers, in the same price range as the R50's (200 for the pair). I don't claim to have golden ears, but i don't want to sink to the level of sony.

what about JBL? where do they fall in the spectrum?

also, i could go with bookshelf types, and build or purchase a stand for them.
i would then have to rigidly couple the speaker to the stand, and spike the stand to the carpet right? or just a sturdy stand, and dynamat between speaker and stand?

    hmmmm........

They were out of stock for 2-3 months in the spring time. If you wait they may be back in stock. I got a pair in Jan. They are nice, but I fell victim to upgraditis. Now I wish I hadn't wasted my money on them. I would look into higher end lines, or if you are money tight - the monitor line.

RTi10s, in the LA Times ad for $300 a pair (probably a misprint, but if you live close to one, grab an LA times and try it.

That's right, they pop up from time to time... or if you can't wait, just scour eBay and your local craiglist

I'd bet you see those at Fry's again.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Everyone's right. Polk will randomly bludgeon Fry's stores with huge shipments of old speakers. If you live in Renton, WA we had 50 pairs delivered to us and are on sale at 59.99 a piece until Tuesday, July 15th 2008. We were surprised at the shipment as we haven't had the R50 for a good 7 months!

Local craigslists are full of _ssholes that buy this closeout stuff at Fry's and
try to resell it on CL. Try $200 for a pair of R50's on CL.

We're posting out of the Renton, WA store and our computers won't allow us to see the prices of other stores, but we CAN see if they have it in stock or not. Prices are more than likely NOT going to be the same especially if they're on sale.

If you need tower speakers now, Harman's eBay store lists a single Primus 362 each night at around 8:30 PM for a 24 hour auction. If you snipe at the last minute you can get them for around $70 a piece plus $34 shipping (plus tax in many states) so right around $200. For that price it's an arguably better deal than the R-series which have never been my cup of tea.

Polk Direct has also been selling a lot of Monitor series speakers recently, and the Monitor 50 towers are probably nicer than the R50s and can be had for under $200.

    Good luck with the search!

The Infinity Primus 362a is actually better than the Polk R50s. Fry's occasionally has the Infinity Primus on sale for 99.00. So it is 199.98 for the pair which is arguably better price than Harman's ebay store. Plus you don't need to wait in front of your computer around 8:30 and you could listen to it in the store LIVE! =) see you here!
