The only thing the firmware really improves is the time to lock onto the audio signal. Not a big deal really. I wouldn't attempt it if I were you. Its much more complicated and you need to have the computer hooked to the receiver with a serial cable, which most people don't have.

You might be able to use your Panny. If you do, just make sure that anything that modifies the audio signal is turned off. Remaster, dialog enhancer, dynamic range compressor, downconversion, etc. Everything OFF!
It might also help to play a regular CD just prior to attempting the DSP update. This will set the receiver to receive PCM audio. That way, the receiver is ready to pick up the signal as soon as you start the player with the update.

    Good luck.

Thanks a bunch!!! So follow the 805 way which Im sure my 805 needs this also & use optical only & should I unhook the hdmi cable just have the optical cable hook-up?

I don't think you have unhook anything, just make sure the optical cable is plugged into Optical 1. Also, you may have to turn off HDMI audio out on the player, some players disable optical and coax digital out when HDMI audio is on.

If its easy to do, I'd unhook the HDMI. It may make things work smoother. However, make sure you do all the audio settings first when you can still see the display ;)

One other thing: You sometimes have to replay the track a few times to get the full update. If the player stops, just hit play again. Also, don't expect the unit to turn itself off like the directions say. Virtually everyone who has done this update has to manually power off the receiver afterward. Just watch the display and look for DSP1 Updating, followed by DSP2 Updating. Some people see DSP3 updating, but many do not. Depends how old your unit is and what DSP firmware is installed. I did not see DSP3 updating because mine was already current.
