Polk deals are just falling in my lap!!!

First, I was able to pick up a pair of Polk Monitor 10Bs for $50...
Then I was able to pick up a pair of broken RTA-12Cs for $50...
Now I can pick up a pair of RTA-11TLs for $50...
and a also a pair of black RT2000Ps for free!!!

Are the RTA-11TLs any good? Opinions gladly accepted.

    Jon,
You sound like me 3 months ago. I hit a pair of RTA-11T for $50 (which included a nice Yamaha receiver and high end Monster speaker cables), then a pair of Monitor 7B for $50 (which had the stands included), then I finally hit the SDA jackpot and brought home a pair of 1Cs for $250. I sold the RTA and 7C for $350 and basically came out with a pair of SDAs for free (and still have the nice speaker cables and receiver).

Enjoy it while it lasts. Its certainly a great way to experience a variety of speakers without blowing a bunch of money.
For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore...

Either of the RTA-11s are very good speakers. Especially impressive considering the small size.

Jon, where are you finding all these good deals?

    Sal

The Monitor 10s were advertised in the local paper... lucky to be the first caller...

the RTA12Cs and RTA11TLs were craigslisted

the RT2000P was a hand me down from a friend, who also gave me a Nakamichi Stasis Power Amp, they were all just sitting in his garage after he rennovated his home theater. Other than a couple of minor dings, they work fine...

I missed a pair of Polk RT55s that were craiglisted for $100. The lister said they were available and I told him I wanted it and to call me but he never did...

    The bad news....
Finally got to see the RTA-11TLs.... I had to pass on them. The lister told me the finish was real wood... NOT!!! It was black vinyl. All the pegs that hold the grille in place were missing and the grille cloth was in sad shape as if it was attacked by cats. the cabs were in fair condition but the drivers looked bad, all dusty and the surrounds were gummy for some reason. All the screws holding the drivers were corroded and one speaker had no binding posts... the posts were broken off at the base and the speaker wires were held by duct tape... oh yeah, he said the speakers were only three years old (yeah, right!!!)

    maybe some good news....
one of my co-workers says his uncle has a pair of speakers that he is planning to dump and they are Polks. He said they are about four feet tall, oak finished and the way he described them, they could be SDA-1s or 2s... he'll let me know later.

I am not into the SDAs but I said i could probably take a look at them. If they are broken, i could either upgrade them to above spec or at least salvage the drivers. The saga continues...

If those are SDAs and you decide to salvage the drivers I could use the crossovers as my 2Bs have two different style xovers in them.My left ch is a little louder than the right and has a different tonal balance.I need the mid driver wire harness too.(With the plug)My left ch has the wires soldered directly to the xover. The right has the common m/f plugs.

Had some good news/bad news over the weekend... someone posted on craigslist in Hawaii for a pair of Polk Monitor 10s for $50... went to look at them.. they are the original Monitor 10s... with the paper ring on the edge of the drivers, the drivers were plain paper and not polymer coated. The tweeters were the Peerless but were dead. The cabinets were in bad shape and had no grilles. So I passed...

The good news is that one of my firends is giving me a pair of Polk SDA-2s for free. They were sitting in his uncle's house had he wanted to get rid of them because they were too big. I might just salvage the drivers but not sure.

I was also able to pick up a pair of Polk Monitor 5Bs for free... they have the rosewood vinyl veneer. the bottoms are beaten up so I think I might want to reveneer them. Also, the dust caps on the mid-woofers look torn (I noticed that a lot of mid-woofers have torn dust caps... why is that?)...

Last but not least, I am thinking of making a Polkenstein speaker... I was thinking of trying to make a new cabinet using the Polk mid-woofers with the RTA-12C crossovers and passive radiator and maybe using the Vifa GT25 tweeter since I have a few of them in the house. I want to make the speaker look like the AMT-3 Monitor speakers which i thought looked cool...

any suggestions? To me, the weak point with the RTA-12s are the top hats which are braced with a plastic frame, plus the fact the the plastic guide pins always break off.

I had a pair of ESS AMT-3 Rock Monitors several years ago and loved it back then. Problem was that the surrounds rotted and the grill crumbled as it aged.

But the side panels extended above the cabinet and protected the Heil tweeter. The side cutouts allowed the sound to disperse laterally as well. I currently have another pair of passive radiators from a RTA-12C from ebay and looking for a set of crossovers. I was going to build the cabinet from scratch and put the drivers in to see how it would sound. I was also planning to place the drivers vertically to minimize crosstalk diffraction which occurs when the drivers are placed side by side. Since one of the mid-woofers does not extend above 600Hz, I would put that one above the passive radiator.

The cabinet would basically be about the same volume as the RTA-12 but the passive radiator will have to be lower in order to have enough vertical space for the two 6 1/2 mid-woofers. I am also thinking of making the cabinets a tad narrower but deeper to offset the volume reduction.

For all i know, I just might build a new speaker system from scratch using all new drivers from PE with planar tweeters and Dayton subs (ha! ha!)... just depends on how ambitious I get.
