Rear Speaker placement

O mighty guru's (and those that think you are)

After far too much reading on the subject, can someone please give a definitive answer to the following question.

What is the proper HEIGHT for REAR SURROUND SPEAKERS?

Here's the situation.
The couch is 36" high.
The room is open to the rear of the required placement, therefore requiring the speakers to be a) on stands, or b) (if I lose my mind completely) suspended down from the ceiling. Mounting on the back wall is IMPOSSIBLE!!!

Many thanks in advance for what I am sure is the dumbest "help needed" posted in quite some time.
What I got so far:

Mits 73833 DLP.............TV
Monster Power HTS 5100 MkII Power Thingy

RTi 12's........................Front (Black)
CSi5............................Center (Black)
RTi6............................Surround (Black)
FXi5............................Rear Surround (Black)
PSW 505..................... Sub (Black)

Undecided on receiver at present, leaning toward Denon 3808ci or Onkyo 875

As you can tell this is a work in progress, thankfully it is progressing FAST!!!

I found 2-3 above the seating position works well.

    Get some tall stands.

+1 ,for best results the surrounds should be elevated well above ear level.

Esrivkin asked the same question I was going to ask. What is "2-3 above the seating position" mean? Does that mean 2 to 3 times above the listening height?

Also...How far apart should they be? I'm planing on each one of mine being 30" off the center line of my living room.

Getting bookcases for DVDs and putting rear surrounds on one of the shelves for each side.
Be gentle, I'm new to all this...
